2. Sarabande (Orchestrated by M. Ravel)
3. Quelques aspects… (Orchestrated by Z. Kocsis)
Debussy's (1862-1918) series of Images composed for piano in 1894 was unknown to music historians for many years. Individual movements or parts from them did make their reappearance in later works. In the third movement of Images pour orchestre (Rondes de Printemps), Debussy utilises the same popular French folk song (Nous n'irons plus au bois) as the one in the third movement of the piano series, but we can also find it in Jardins sous la pluie from Estampes (1903). Interestingly, this is also the third movement. The second movement (Sarabande) was reworked in Pour le Piano. This baroque dance form is used to evoke the spirit of Rameau, the great 18th century French composer, who Debussy and contemporaries identified with all that was most noble in the French tradition, with elegance and true classical values. The use of “Sarabande” as a title is probably a reference to an earlier work by Erik Satie. In the 1890's, Satie and Debussy were close friends.
