I. piano concerto (c-minor) op.35

Shostakovich composed his first (C-minor) concerto at the age of 27 in 1933. The work departs from the traditional three-movement structure of concertos in that a long bridge-passage is inserted between the slow movement and the finale. In addition to the piano, the orchestral apparatus consists of just strings and a solo trumpet. The trumpet only occasionally joins in the musical process, but assumes a key role in highlighting some important formal turns and in introducing new themes. Shostakovich maintained the work was of a “light genre” in that its musical material and palette of characters are highly varied, and it features numerous parody-like quotations, such as the English nursery song “Poor Jenny”, played by the trumpet in the finale.
