Adagio

Samuel Barber (1910–1981) was one of the most popular American composers of the twentieth century, and the most performed composer in the mid-century. He established his reputation with his Adagio for strings that received its premiere in 1938 with Arturo Toscanini conducting the NBC Symphony Orchestra. Adagio is in fact the slow movement of Barber’s only string quartet, transcribed for string orchestra by the composer.
