The composer first met the poet, Golenischev-Kutuzov in 1873. Several works were born out of their life-long friendship. Death appears in different forms in Kutuzov’s poems. He lulls the child to sleep, serenades the young girl, is an understanding friend to the drunk peasant when rocking him into frozen death and finally, as a mounted general, surveys the corpses on a battle-field.
