A well-written work is like a subtle device in which scores of tiny cogwheels are required to turn with clockwork precision, every element and part has to fit seamlessly and work together for everything to function properly. Scenes, characters, moods are varied in the opera, yet they are logically interconnected. The plot is rich in turns, its pieces interlock like a puzzle and eventually the full picture emerges. Producing a performance is not unlike this process, and is always the fruit of many participants. This afternoon we can see who builds the production, how a performance evolves, who works in it and how the instrumentalists and the singers contribute. The structure of the classical fairy-tale is “taken to pieces.”
