For many years now it has been traditional to perform one of Tchaikovsky’s most popular ballets at Christmas for children and adults, parents and grandparents. “Naïve humour, refreshing playfulness, creativity and attractive imagery which never contradicts the spirit of the music,” music critic Kristóf Csengery wrote about the performance. “The Nutcracker is a stage work which, of course, has a story, and as such it portrays conflict and dramatic turns. Nevertheless, I had the feeling that at the heart of this performance was not the ‘mythic clash’ of the Nutcracker and the Mouse King (although that also happened), but the timeless harmony, joy, beauty going beyond the narrative, as well as the melodic and harmonic ingenuity and grace of the successive dances.”
