Cinderella – suite, No. 1, Op. 107

Prokofiev compiled three different orchestral suites from his ballet Cinderella (1940–1944). Suite No. 1 uses excerpts from the first two acts. In most cases he significantly re-worked and amended the original version, often combining several different numbers of the ballet into a single movement in the suite. Also, the order of excerpts does not always follow the chronology of the plot. 1.Introduction: at the beginning and end of the movement we hear the theme of the enslaved Cinderella, with the theme of the girl dreaming of the ball in the middle. 2.Pas de châle: a grotesque dance of the two stepsisters. 3.The Quarrel: the squabbling of the two stepsisters. 4. Fairy Godmother and the Winter Fairy: the scene where fairy magic makes a dress, a carriage and horses appear. 5.Mazurka: one of the dances of the ball. 6.Cinderella Goes to the Ball: the movement begins with Cinderella’s excited music, followed by the waltz played at the ball. 7. Cinderella’s Waltz: The passionate closing part of Cinderella’s and the Prince’s dance. 8.Midnight: the face of the big clock lights up: it is nearing midnight! We hear the rapping of the seconds and the clock striking twelve. The short closing section evokes Cinderella’s theme where she is dreaming about the ball, only this time triumphantly with full orchestra: the Prince stands on the stage, holding a single glass shoe…
