Chamber music – Faces of the 20th century

2013. 01. 25.

Faces of the twentieth century – this interesting compilation features Bartók’s trio, Contrasts which he dedicated to the legendary jazz clarinettist Benny Goodman. In 1906 Schoenberg completed his Chamber Symphony which calls for fifteen musicians. As the title suggests it hovers on the border of genres. The performance of Lajtha’s Quatre Hommages is occasioned by the Lajtha year in 2013. The eminent ethnomusicologist dedicated each movement to a different master of French music. The contemporary American David Lang composed Lend/Lease – inspired by the mutual help the United States and the United Kingdom gave each other in World War Two – for the birthday of the London Sinfonietta. Died in 1996 and known for his cryptic titles, the Japanese Toru Takemitsu composed Cross Hatch, a one-minute miniature with Baroque rhythms, in 1982. György Ligeti’s son Lukas Ligeti wrote the exciting work in the programme for the German-Cameroonian dancer Bettina Essaka. Uniting two remote worlds, it brings together Mali percussion music and Scarlatti’s keyboard music, and the thread in this maze of styles is the American folk song Shenandoah.

The concert is hosted by Music Historian Sándor Kovács.
