An elegantly light repast that feels like it could be served in an aristocratic Viennese palace – under crystal chandeliers and accompanied by delicately tinkling cutlery and heavenly music. The programme commences with Mozart’s fresh and playful overture to Così fan tutte, immediately setting the cheerful tone for the evening. The main course is the opening movement of Haydn’s ‘Drumroll’ symphony, a true classical masterpiece, astonishing from the very beginning, courtesy of the timpani, which is followed by a series of lively and witty musical twists and turns. And what worthier piece to cap off these Austrian flavours than Johann Strauss’s Blue Danube Waltz? Evoking a Viennese ball, its refined rhythmic swaying invites everyone to dance. Conducting the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra will be Levente Török, with the experience once again enhanced by Szilveszter Szélpál and his light, yet substantive commentary.
