The first version of the symphony was premiered in Budapest in 1889 conducted by the composer. At that time it consisted of 5 movements, but later Mahler made some adjustments and reduced it to four. This final version was performed in Berlin in 1896 and it became wildly know. Although the original scores has not been found, another five movement variation remained.
