Well known and celebrated on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean, Yoav Talmi is currently the Artistic Director and Conductor of the Quebec Symphony in Canada, Principal Guest Conductor of the Israel Chamber Orchestra in Tel Aviv and Head of Orchestral-Conducting Department at the University of Tel Aviv Buchmann-Mehta School of Music, In collaboration with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra.\r\nIn the past, he has served as Chief Conductor of orchestras in Germany, Netherland, USA and Israel.<\/p>\r\n

Maestro Talmi\u2019s long and impressive guest conducting career spans several continents. His European engagements include all the major London orchestras, the Berlin Philharmonic, Amsterdam\u2019s Concertgebouw, the Symphony Orchestras of Vienna and Prague, the Philharmonic Orchestras of St. Petersburg, Oslo, Stockholm, Warsaw and Israel, the Orchestre National de France, Zurich\u2019s Tonhalle, Rome\u2019s Santa Cecilia, and numerous radio orchestras in Israel, France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Poland, The Netherlands, Belgium, Finland and Sweden. He has also made several appearances with the NHK Symphony and the New Philharmonic Orchestras in Japan.\r\nYoav Talmi\u2019s summer activities includes the Aspen Music Festival, Casals Festival in Puerto Rico, Bergen Festival in Norway, Chautauqua Festival (NY), Helsinki Festival, Houston\u2019s Mostly Mozart Festival, Jerusalem Festival, Montreal\u2019s Lanaudi\u00e8re Festival and the Waterloo Festival in New Jersey.\r\nAlso a seasoned recording artist, Yoav Talmi has collaborated with Chandos, Decca, EMI, Naxos, Teldec. CBC Records (Toronto), Atma and Analekta (Montreal). His recording of Bruckner\u2019s Ninth Symphony with the Oslo Philharmonic won the prestigious \u201cGrand Prix du Disque\u201d in Paris. Mr. Talmi\u2019s recording of Schoenberg and Tchaikovsky with the Israel Chamber Orchestra for Teldec was chosen \u201cRecord of the Month\u201d by Germany\u2019s Fono-Forum magazine. The London Penguin Guide gave this same recording its highest rating. His recent recording French Showpieces with the Quebec Symphony and violinist James Ehnes was chosen \u201cRecord of the Month\u201d by the French media magazine Repertoire, who gave this recording a perfect rating. Talmi\u2019s Naxos recordings with the San Diego Symphony feature an all-Berlioz cycle that includes the Symphonie fantastique, the complete overtures, Rom\u00e9o et Juliette, Harold in Italy, R\u00eaverie et Caprice, excerpts from Les Troyens, and more. He has recorded also as pianist, accompanying his wife, flutist Er\u2019ella Talmi.\r\nBorn in Israel, Yoav Talmi is a graduate of the Rubin Academy of Music in Tel Aviv and The Juilliard School in New York, where he earned degrees in both composition and conducting with grants from the America Israel Cultural Foundation (AICF). He was a recipient of the Koussevitzky Memorial Conducting Prize at the Tanglewood Festival [1969] and the Rupert Conductor\u2019s Competition in London [1973].\r\nIn July 2008, Yoav Talmi was awarded the \u2018Frank Pelleg\u2019 prize of the Israeli Cultural Ministry, for his high-level artistic achievements through many years of activity. \"Since playing on the Piano as a child Schumann\u2019s Kinderszenen (Scenes from Childhood), I always heard it in my head with orchestral \u2018dressing\u2019. Schumann\u2019s 200-birth anniversary in 2010 gave me finally the initiative to realize my youth\u2019s wish.<\/p>\r\n

\r\nThe Kinderszenen are a touching tribute to the eternal, universal memories of childhood from a nostalgic adult perspective. Unlike his Album for the Young, Op. 68, the Kinderszenen were not intended to be played by children. Schumann claimed that the picturesque thirteen titles attached to the pieces were added as an afterthought - in order to provide subtle suggestions to the performer.<\/p>\r\n

In working on the orchestration of this descriptive work, I wanted to preserve and even enhance the three different personalities of Schumann that are so obvious in the various 13 miniatures: the masculine, impulsive and impetuous Florestan, the dreamer and feminine Eusebius, and the rationalist and lucid Raro.\r\nThus vigorous Brass writing help to enhances the Florestan movements, soft woodwinds solos and dreamy string describe the Eusebius movements, and the whole orchestra illustrates the more \u2018earthy\u2019 pieces of Raro.\r\nI allowed myself only one structural change: at the very end - as movement No. 14, I have re-entered the 6th movement (\u2018Important Event\u2019): It reappears now as an Epilog to the entire work, but now in G Major - the main key of the work, orchestrated for the full orchestra.\r\nTwo separate orchestrations are available from KALMUS for this work: the first - for full symphonic orchestra, the second - for chamber orchestra.\" Yoav Talmi<\/p>\r\n

In almost two decades the National Philharmonic Orchestra underwent renewal. After the death of Zolt\u00e1n Kocsis, the Ferenc Liszt Award-winning Zsolt Hamar held the post of Musical Director at the Hungarian National Philharmonic from March 2017 to August 2020.
