Born in Cecina, the violinist and conductor kicked off his career in the early ’90s at the events of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino festival.

He was soon discovered and mentored by Zubin Mehta, one of the great maestros of our time. He has since delighted opera fans with his conducting in Warsaw, Milan, Venice, Dresden, Munich, Hamburg, Frankfurt, San Francisco, Tokyo and many other cities, including in Australia and South Korea. He has also taken up the baton as a guest with ensembles in Cincinnati, Atlanta, Seattle, Boston, Dallas and Fort Worth, as well as with WDR Cologne and the Orchestra dell’Accademia di Santa Cecilia.

In addition to his dedication to conducting opera, he is also completely at home in the world of symphonic music. At the concerts we performed together, we admired his precision and energy, his dramatic sense, the richness of his emotionallanguage, and his evocativeness. Our collaboration in this form will run until the end of the 2028/2029 season – and we are excitedly awaiting what Maestro Montanaro's further guest appearances have in store!

Carlo Montanaro

{:
{:hu}
1816-ban, A sevillai borbély évében a huszonnégy éves Rossini operaszerzői pályafutásának alig több mit egyharmadánál tartott. Cesare Sterbini wrote the libretto for the Rossini work, but did not actually call it The Barber of Seville opting instead for Almaviva. Rossini was a mere twenty four in 1816, when he composed The Barber of Seville and already had one third of his eventual career behind him. He began writing operas at the age of eighteen and by the time of The Barber, had already contributed eighteen other stage works, including comedies and opera seria. Rossini was forced to work at speed, dictated by the dizzying pace of the Italian opera craze. The Barber of Seville had to be written at even greater haste than usual for other reasons. He acquired the theme of the opera almost by accident. Rossini had a contract to write an opera for the Rome based Argentina Theatre to be performed during the 1816 carnival season. However neither Rossini nor the commissioners had banked on the Papal authorities rejecting a procession of proposed libretti. In the end, they decided to fall back on the Beaumarchais comedy which could boast an unimpeachable past in this respect. These events conspired to even worse deadline problems than usual for Rossini, who nonetheless pulled the rabbit from the hat a mere 21 days later. Indeed, some scholars claim a mere 13. And despite such unpromising beginnings, the result was one of the masterpieces of Rossini's oeuvre.

The rapidly approaching deadline forced Rossini to pillage his own oeuvre, although this was par for the course with composers of his era. Premiered in 1883, Brahms’s Symphony No. 3, for example, is usually contrasted with Eroica, composed some eighty years before; yet the Eroica’s ambitious hero is barely reminiscent of the ‘hero’ of Brahms’s work, who seems to be gnawing at himself rather than the enemy. It is no accident then that every movement in the symphony ends in gloomy silence, and the third movement is not the customary scherzo but a ‘second slow movement’, and a profoundly melancholic one at that. Further analysis reveals that during the work the basic F-major key frequently transforms into the minor key, casting a gloomy shadow over the entire symphony. However, Brahms kept the most resigned gesture for the closing bars of what is a seemingly lusty finale when reminiscences of the opening movement float about and the listener is forced to concede that having made four movements’ worth of effort, the ‘hero’ has barely budged from the starting point.

{:}
["Brahms
{:hu}Csáki András generációjának kiemelkedő gitáros egyénisége. The era marked by the name of János Ferencsik and Kobayashi Ken-Ichiro was followed by a new chapter in the history of the orchestra when in 1997 Zoltán Kocsis became general music director until his death. In almost two decades the National Philharmonic Orchestra underwent renewal. After the death of Zoltán Kocsis, the Ferenc Liszt Award-winning Zsolt Hamar held the post of Musical Director at the Hungarian National Philharmonic from March 2017 to August 2020. He previously worked with the orchestra as its first permanent conductor and built up an impressive international career.

The Orchestra is one of the top interpreters of the work of Béla Bartók, and the albums of the Bartók New Series have won numerous accolades in Hungary and abroad. The orchestra perform not only classics but also numerous other important works previously missing from the repertoire, many of which require a large orchestral apparatus. It attaches great importance to introducing contemporary Hungarian works to the audiences. It has given many popular chamber music concerts and hosted events for young people.

The orchestra’s concerts have featured world-famous soloists and conductors. It supports young musicians recently embarked on an international career. In recent decades, the National Philharmonic Orchestra has appeared in the greatest venues and festivals around the world, including the Avery Fisher Hall in New York, the Suntory Hall in Tokyo, the Birmingham Symphony Hall, the Megaron in Athens, Bozar Centre in Brussels, the Enescu Festival in Bucharest, the Beethoven Festival in Bogotá, as well as the Colmar and Canary Island Festivals.
