Put the director’s glass hat on your head, think up a magic spell, touch the object in front of you, and believe us, it will come to life. All you need to do is listen to the music, because the composer has set a few rules, but following his ideas through, adding to them and staging them is arguably one of the greatest challenges in the world. The story might be familiar. A bored little boy refuses to write his homework. His mother scolds him and locks him in his room till supper. (The work was written in the 1920s when parents were stricter.) The little boy goes on the rampage, not sparing walls, fireplace, furniture or books. The idea for the music goes back to the piano études of 1826 and the fourth piece of the Grand Études. In 1840 Liszt took this piece from the cycle and, adapted to Victor Hugo’s poem Mazeppa, he dedicated it to the poet. In 1851 Liszt had it published under Transcendental Études (No. 4) and arranged it in a symphonic poem for orchestra. It tells the story of Ivan Mazeppa who was tied to a wild horse, and whose idealised figure was for Liszt a symbol of the artist’s sufferings and triumph.

The first section of the symphonic poem is a transcription and brilliant orchestration of the étude. The march-like main theme returns in many keys and characters, faster every time. In the slow middle section strikes of the kettle drum signal the end of the gallop, the collapse and death of the horse. The third, Allegro marziale section is heralded by a wind signal. The Ukrainians rescue Mazeppa and elect him as their leader. Two new themes alternate in this section. The first, march-like music symbolises Mazeppa’s triumphant rebirth; the second has an oriental dance character and depicts the Ukrainian environment, but with its appoggiaturas and fourth melodies it is not unlike Liszt’s Hungarian-character works either. Towards the end of his life, the British violist, William Primrose commissioned him to write a concerto, but Bartók was unable to finish it. He channelled his remaining energy into completing the Third Piano Concerto instead.

Only 14 pages of manuscript material remain of sketches for the concerto. One of these is an early, rejected sketch for the first movement. In the remainder, the material of the first movement can be clearly followed, and what is missing can be filled in on the basis of analogy and common sense. There are even notes on orchestration. In the case of the other movements, the situation is profoundly obscure. There survives a conspicuously short slow section, there is a type of introduction for viola solo, leading to some kind of music in C major and 2/4 time (in the final bar, Bartók indicates that 2/4 is to follow). There are also some sketches for a dance-like finale - another page remains, full of obscure jottings. After Bartók's death, Tibor Serly undertook to save what he could. He felt it was best to create a traditional three movement work, with a slow movement in the middle. Although he was extremely careful in his work, there is no arguing that the composition he finally produced did not reflect Bartók's original intentions. For example, it now seems highly likely that the "introductory" viola solo was never intended to be placed before the slow section. And yet this peculiar semi-work has been quite a success since its premiere. In spite of its less convincing sections, here and there, true Bartók is instantly recognisable. It is in what Bence Szabolcsi called the "warmly melodic" style that blossomed during his American years, and which began with the Violin Concerto. The music, which in a sense has been brought back from the dead, is uniquely interesting and mystical.
{:}
["Bartók
{:hu}
Bartók, a népzenegyűjtő és népzenetudós zeneszerző így ír a népdalok (saját szóhasználatával élve: parasztdalok) feldolgozási lehetőségeiről: „Miként nyilvánulhat meg a parasztzene hatása a magasabb műzenében? This poem was in itself a "variation on a Hungarian folksong," a powerful, revolutionary rhapsody on the folk poem. It operated with two important images: the peacock representing freedom, and the county jailhouse where the poor prisoners await their liberation.

When Ady wrote this visionary poem, only the text of the folksong was publicly known. The melody, discovered later, became the textbook example of old-style Hungarian folksong: its second half repeats the first half a fifth lower, it adheres completely to the pentatonic scale and follows the free rhythmic style of parlando-rubato. Therefore, it was hardly a coincidence that, from hundreds and thousands of folk songs, Kodály chose the "Peacock" when Willem Mengelberg and the Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam gave him a commission for a major orchestral work. In the course of his scholarly research, Kodály had found that the melodic type of the "Peacock" exists not only as a parlando-rubato melody but also as a dance tune in giusto rhythm. In other words, one of the main characteristics of his set of variations, the contrast between rubato and giusto, was already present in the folk material itself. Kodály had set Ady's poem to music in 1937. In this famous chorus for men's voices, he had also made use of the folk song. The orchestral work is then, in a sense, an outgrowth of the choral composition, developing its ideas further. Following an introduction played by the low strings, the oboe introduces the theme in its original form. There are no fewer than sixteen variations, presenting the most diverse musical characters, in turn lyrical, dance-like, mournful, reserved and impassioned. The triumphant return of the theme at the end of the work clearly suggests that the "liberation of the poor prisoners," of which the poem speaks, is finally at hand.
{:}
["Kodály
Maxim Rysanov hangszerének egyik legjelentősebb képviselője napjainkban. The era marked by the name of János Ferencsik and Kobayashi Ken-Ichiro was followed by a new chapter in the history of the orchestra when in 1997 Zoltán Kocsis became general music director until his death. In almost two decades the National Philharmonic Orchestra underwent renewal. After the death of Zoltán Kocsis, the Ferenc Liszt Award-winning Zsolt Hamar held the post of Musical Director at the Hungarian National Philharmonic from March 2017 to August 2020. He previously worked with the orchestra as its first permanent conductor and built up an impressive international career.

The Orchestra is one of the top interpreters of the work of Béla Bartók, and the albums of the Bartók New Series have won numerous accolades in Hungary and abroad. The orchestra perform not only classics but also numerous other important works previously missing from the repertoire, many of which require a large orchestral apparatus. It attaches great importance to introducing contemporary Hungarian works to the audiences. It has given many popular chamber music concerts and hosted events for young people.

The orchestra’s concerts have featured world-famous soloists and conductors. It supports young musicians recently embarked on an international career. In recent decades, the National Philharmonic Orchestra has appeared in the greatest venues and festivals around the world, including the Avery Fisher Hall in New York, the Suntory Hall in Tokyo, the Birmingham Symphony Hall, the Megaron in Athens, Bozar Centre in Brussels, the Enescu Festival in Bucharest, the Beethoven Festival in Bogotá, as well as the Colmar and Canary Island Festivals.
