The programme features masterpieces by two of the leading personalities of the Romantic era that emerged in the first half of the 19th<\/sup> century. Schumann\u2019s symphony is a curious work. Its four movements constitute a single coherent composition, and with its astonishing transformation of the themes, rich in lyrical and powerful images, Schumann himself called it a symphonic fantasia. Conducted by musical director of the Wiesbaden State Theatre, Zsolt Hamar, the second half of the programme features Mendelssohn\u2019s 1831 cantata envisioning a fantastic world. Goethe\u2019s poem portrays the clash between druids gathering for a pagan ritual in the Harz Mountains and Christians with visionary power. After working as Lorin Maazel\u2019s assistant at the Salzburg Festival in 1998, he spent the years from 2000 to 2009 as the music director of the Pannon Philharmonic while simultaneously serving as first guest conductor of the Orchestra di Padova e del Veneto.\r\n\r\nA regular guest with orchestras and at concert halls around Europe, Japan and the USA, he has also appeared with nearly every symphonic ensemble in Hungary. Hamar has regularly conducted at the Hungarian State Opera since 2001 and is a welcome guest at opera houses in other countries as well. Between 2005 and 2011, he worked as a permanent conductor at the world-famous Opernhaus Z\u00fcrich. He has recorded works by Liszt together with the Hungarian National Philharmonic and Mahler\u2019s First Symphony<\/em> with the Pannon Philharmonic. Robert Schumann, 1841 m\u00e1rcius\u00e1ban bemutatott I. szimf\u00f3ni\u00e1j\u00e1nak siker\u00e9n felbuzdulva, hamarosan felv\u00e1zolt egy m\u00e1sodik, d-moll szimf\u00f3ni\u00e1t. Az \u00faj m\u0171vet szeptember 13-ra, \u00fajdons\u00fclt feles\u00e9ge, Clara sz\u00fclet\u00e9snapj\u00e1ra fejezte be, \u00e9s december 6-\u00e1n hangzott el el\u0151sz\u00f6r, a lipcsei Gewandhausban. A fogadtat\u00e1s ez\u00fattal h\u0171v\u00f6s volt, s ez olyannyira elkedvetlen\u00edtette a komponist\u00e1t, hogy a darabot nem engedte nyomtat\u00e1sban megjelentetni. Composed in 1841, the D minor symphony received its world premiere at the Gewandhaus in Leipzig. It was met with a chilly reception that put Robert Schumann off to the point that he would not allow the symphony to be published. Ten years later, however, he dusted off the score, partly reworked it and entirely re-orchestrated it, and published it two years later under the name of Symphony No. 4.<\/p>\r\n

<\/p>\r\n

The construction of the symphony is unusual. Although it employs the classical four-movement model (with a slow second and scherzo third movement), the four movements are performed in an uninterrupted sequence. Also, the entire music is interwoven with thematic correspondences and references. The six-note motif intoned at the start of the slow introduction in opening movement remains the motto of the entire symphony in that most of the subsequent themes can be derived from it. The \u2018tempestuous\u2019 D-minor main theme emerges at the end of the slow introduction, a new version of which appears later in the form of three energetically hit chords complemented and counterpointed by the incipit of the main theme. The closing movement is preceded by a connecting passage not unlike the one in Beethoven\u2019s Fifth. Here too the music passes from darkness (D minor) to light (D major), leading to the joyfully exploding main theme of the finale, which is none other than the main theme of the opening movement combined with three chords. The brilliant D-major finale is, therefore, a sequel to the opening movement, ending in a triumphant coda.<\/p>\r\n

Felix Mendelssohn (1809\u20131847) sz\u00e1mos alkalommal mer\u00edtett inspir\u00e1ci\u00f3t Goethe k\u00f6lt\u00e9szet\u00e9b\u0151l, melyek k\u00f6z\u00fcl tal\u00e1n a legjelent\u0151sebb Az els\u0151 Walpurgis \u00e9j (Die erste Walpurgisnacht, op.60) c\u00edm\u0171 kant\u00e1ta kompon\u00e1l\u00e1sa volt az azonos c\u00edm\u0171 ballada nyom\u00e1n. The era marked by the name of J\u00e1nos Ferencsik and Kobayashi Ken-Ichiro was followed by a new chapter in the history of the orchestra when in 1997 Zolt\u00e1n Kocsis became general music director until his death. In almost two decades the National Philharmonic Orchestra underwent renewal. After the death of Zolt\u00e1n Kocsis, the Ferenc Liszt Award-winning Zsolt Hamar held the post of Musical Director at the Hungarian National Philharmonic from March 2017 to August 2020. He previously worked with the orchestra as its first permanent conductor and built up an impressive international career.\r\n\r\nThe Orchestra is one of the top interpreters of the work of B\u00e9la Bart\u00f3k, and the albums of the Bart\u00f3k New Series<\/em> have won numerous accolades in Hungary and abroad. The orchestra perform not only classics but also numerous other important works previously missing from the repertoire, many of which require a large orchestral apparatus. It attaches great importance to introducing contemporary Hungarian works to the audiences.
