This choral symphony, which Penderecki composed to commemorate the third millennium of Jerusalem, had its premiere in Israel in 1997. The libretto, which comprises extracts from psalms and the Books of Ezekiel, Isaiah, Daniel and Jeremiah, inspired the composer to a monumental work, which employs three choruses, a narrator and solo singers, and which is often compared to Mahler\u2019s Symphony No. 8.<\/p>\n

\n

Penderecki earned fame in the early 1960s with works that relied on radically new, unusual sounds, elicited from string instruments in unconventional ways. It soon became evident, however, that the composer did not consider stylistic extremes an end in itself, and was far more attracted to a new synthesis of avant-garde means and the tradition \u2013 it being a deep tradition composers had already forgotten about by the middle of the 20th century.<\/p>\n

Between 1990 and 2016 it was headed by M\u00e1ty\u00e1s Antal, who was succeeded by Csaba Somos on 1 January 2016. The choir is one of Hungary\u2019s leading professional choirs. It boasts a rich repertoire chiefly consisting of orchestra-accompanied and a capella choral music, as well as oratorios, ranging from works by the early-Baroque Sch\u00fctz to Bach, Viennese Classical, 19th<\/sup> and 20th<\/sup>-century composers, and contemporary music. The Hungarian National Choir is open to every genre and is dedicated to performing rarely heard works. While the backbone of the repertoire consists of 19th<\/sup>-century oratorios, the Hungarian National Choir attaches great importance to performing contemporary music.
