The longest piano concerto ever written, Busoni\u2019s C major requires immense stamina from the soloist. Composed to the closing scene of the Danish Romantic poet Gottlob Oehlenschl\u00e4ger\u2019s lyrical drama Aladdin<\/em>, the monumental symphony has five movements and features a male chorus in the finale. The exciting work is performed by Kun Woo Paik (celebrating his 70th<\/sup> birthday this year) who is as eccentric among pianists as Ferruccio Busoni (celebrating his 150th<\/sup> this year) was in his own time. The South-Korean pianist is considered to be a curious figure on the international music scene, captivating his audiences in mature, unusual productions and breathtaking virtuosity. B\u00e9csben \u00e9s Lipcs\u00e9ben tanult, majd Helsinkiben \u00e9s Moszkv\u00e1ban tan\u00edtott, 1892-t\u0151l pedig az Egyes\u00fclt \u00e1llamokban, Bostonban \u00e9s New Yorkban \u00e9lt. 28 \u00e9vesen Berlinben telepedett le \u00e9s a koncertez\u00e9st\u0151l egyre ink\u00e1bb a zeneszerz\u00e9s fel\u00e9 fordult. A 3. t\u00e9tel (Pezzo serioso) a leghosszabb, n\u00e9gy r\u00e9szes szerkezet\u00e9vel, tematikus visszat\u00e9r\u00e9seivel \u00f6nmag\u00e1ban is teljes \u00e9rt\u00e9k\u0171 versenym\u0171nek sz\u00e1m\u00edt. Busoni zen\u00e9je ez\u00fattal is t\u00f6bbsz\u00f6r t\u0171nik \u00f6nc\u00e9l\u00faan zs\u00fafoltnak, de itt ker\u00fcl legk\u00f6zelebb ahhoz, amit a klasszikus-romantikus m\u0171faji hagyom\u00e1ny alapj\u00e1n a k\u00f6z\u00f6ns\u00e9g concert\u00f3k\u00e9nt elv\u00e1rhat. A 4. t\u00e9tel (All\u2019Italiana \u2013 Tarantella) nehezebb j\u00e1tszani val\u00f3t k\u00edn\u00e1l, mint eddig a darab b\u00e1rmikor. Szinte t\u00e9bolyult, \u0151rj\u00f6ng\u0151en vad sodr\u00e1sa ellen\u00e9re egys\u00e9ges zenei kompoz\u00edci\u00f3 benyom\u00e1s\u00e1t kelti.\r\nAz 5. t\u00e9tel (Cantico) Adam Oehlenschl\u00e4ger Himnusz Allahhoz c\u00edm\u0171 vers\u00e9nek megzen\u00e9s\u00edt\u00e9se. Busoni Oehlenschl\u00e4ger Aladdin, avagy a csodal\u00e1mpa c. verses dr\u00e1m\u00e1ja nyom\u00e1n \u00f6sszm\u0171v\u00e9szeti darabot tervezett, \u00e9s a befejezetlen\u00fcl maradt m\u0171 z\u00e1r\u00f3k\u00f3rus\u00e1t a zongoraversenyben haszn\u00e1lta fel. Nem is a szavak jelent\u00e9se, hanem a var\u00e1zslat jelleg volt fontos a sz\u00e1m\u00e1ra. A l\u00e1thatatlan f\u00e9rfikar v\u00e9gig akkordokat \u00e9nekel, mintha egy sz\u00f6veget megsz\u00f3laltat\u00f3 harsonaegy\u00fcttese lenne. Szinte teljesen \u00e1tveszi a sz\u00f3l\u00f3hangszer szerep\u00e9t, az pedig felold\u00f3dik az hangz\u00e1s eg\u00e9sz\u00e9ben. (Gombos L\u00e1szl\u00f3)<\/p>{:}{:en}Italian-born German pianist and composer Ferruccio Busoni (1866\u20131924) settled in Berlin after an adventurous youth, and premi\u00e8red his monumental Piano Concerto in C major (op. 39) there in 1904. With a male choir in the closing movement, the seventy-minute work is considered to be the longest-ever piano concerto. The piano assumes a different role in comparison with traditional concerti in that it now plays extremely long and challenging passage, now it blends into the orchestral sonority, and never plays any of the major themes.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nMovement one (Prologo e Introito<\/em>) sets off with a hymnic string melody from which all of the others are derived. Movement two (Pezzo giocoso<\/em>) is a sort of scherzo with Italian melodies and rhythms; without, however, any folk-music references. Movement three (Pezzo serioso<\/em>) is the longest, consisting of four parts and, with its recapitulations, constituting a concerto in its own right. Movement four (All\u2019Italiana \u2013 Tarantella<\/em>) offers more challenging music than before in the work. In spite of its wildly raging flow, it has the impression of being a coherent musical composition. Movement five (Cantico<\/em>) is a setting of Danish playright Adam Oehlenschl\u00e4ger\u2019s poem Hymn to Allah<\/em>.\u00a0 The off-stage male choir sings chords and completely takes over the role of solo instrument. I have never written anything so sad, and the score must come out in mourning,\u2019 Brahms wrote to his publisher Fritz Simrock shortly before the Symphony No. 2 was due to receive its first performance on 30 December 1877. However, at the premi?re given under the baton of Hans Richter, it transpired that the composer was only joking and to Simrock\u2019s immense relief the work proved to be unexpectedly light in tone (at least in comparison with Brahms\u2019s other compositions) and met with considerable success.<\/p>\r\n

\r\nThe \u2018melancholic\u2019 tone Brahms was ironically referring to is in fact only evident in the second movement, while the first is best described as \u2018pastorale\u2019 \u2013 all the more so, given that Brahms was spending his summer holiday in the beautiful Carinthian mountains when he wrote the symphony. The third movementcan be regarded as a somewhat awkward joke. The breezy oboe theme becomes, by means of a change of metre and character, its own caricature. Kun Woo Paik was born in Seoul and gave his first concert, aged 10, with the Korean National Orchestra (Grieg piano concerto). In the following years he performed many important works in Korea, including several premieres such as Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition. Later he studied in New York (Juilliard School), London, and in Italy with Rosina Lhevinne, Ilona Kabos, Guido Agosti and Willhelm Kempff. Kun Woo Paik is also a laureate of the Naumburg and Busoni International Piano Competitions.<\/p>\r\n

Over the years Kun Woo Paik has performed recitals in major musical centres such as the Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, Wigmore Hall and Berlin Philharmonie. He has also performed with such orchestras as the London Symphony, BBC Symphony (Last Night of the Proms 1987), Pittsburgh Symphony, Russian National Orchestra, Saint Petersburg Philharmonic, Orchestre de Paris, Orchestre National de France, Ensemble Orchestral de Paris, Rai Torino, Warsaw Philharmonic, English Chamber Orchestra and Polish National Radio Orchestra, with such conductors as Mariss Jansons, Sir Neville Marriner, Lawrence Foster, Mikhail Pletnev, Dmitri Kitaenko, James Conlon, John Nelson and Eliahu Inbal. Kun Woo Paik is also a regular guest artist at major music festivals such as the Berlin Festwochen, Aix-en-Provence, La Roque d'Antheron, Colmar, Spoleto, Aldeburgh, \"Mostly Mozart\" and Ravinia Festivals, and has toured extensively in Australia, New Zealand, Asia and Italy.<\/p>\r\n

His repertoire is very varied and comprises such rare works as Busoni's piano concerto, Faur\u00e9's Fantasy for piano and orchestra and Liszt's Fantasy on themes from Berlioz's Lelio. Kun Woo Paik also performs a wide selection of transcriptions by Liszt and Berlioz and is the dedicatee of Suk-Hi Kang's piano concerto.<\/p>\r\n

Mr. Paik has recorded the complete Prokofiev piano concertos with Antoni Wit\/Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra for RCA (Diapason d'or in 1993), the complete Rachmaninov's piano with Wladimir Fedosseyev \/ Moscow Radio Symphony Orchestra (BMG), as well as several solo CDs of Scriabin, Liszt, Mussorgsky, Rachmaninov, Mendelssohn piano music. In 2000 he signed an exclusive recording contract with Decca Classics. The first release was Bach\/Busoni, a much acclaimed CD of transcriptions of Bach's organ works. In February 2002 Decca will release a 2nd recital dedicated to Faur\u00e9.<\/p>\r\n

Kun Woo Paik lives in Paris, is the Artistic Director of the Emerald Coast Music Festival in Dinard (France) and was made\u00a0 \"Chevalier de l'ordre des arts et des lettres\" by the French Government in 2000.
