The Master Series opening event is among the most significant musical events in P\u00e9cs in 2026. This year, Filharmonia Hungary hosts the Franz Liszt International Piano Competition. The piano has the largest repertoire of any instrument, and performers aim to emulate legendary virtuosos. A key trait of the instrument is that its potential is often limited only by the player’s skill. Outstanding young pianists from around the world continue to emerge\u2014from Hungary to America to the Far East. In early September, selected finalists arrive in P\u00e9cs for live rounds judged by an international jury. The competition has received 76 applications from 24 countries across four continents.<\/p>\n

In the orchestral final, only the four top contestants compete. Participants must choose two of three possible works beforehand, and the jury then selects which piece to perform. These three compositions for piano and orchestra exemplify the Romantic virtuoso piano repertoire. All three present the soloist with highly demanding technical challenges: rapid runs, powerful chords, octave sequences, large leaps, and stark dynamic contrasts. Moreover, the piano often competes with the orchestra’s full sound, requiring great stamina and precise technical control. The performer must also work sensitively with the orchestra, shaping not only virtuosity but also dramatic and lyrical nuances. No other sport demands that finalists be as vulnerable, expressive, delicate, and attuned to subtle nuances at such a critical stage\u2014cooperating, breathing together, and making an impact on dozens of strangers, often communicating only through quick glances. The instrument becomes an ally, as does the 2024. m\u00e1rcius 15-i nemzeti \u00fcnnep\u00fcnk alkalm\u00e1b\u00f3l \u00e9rt\u00e9kteremt\u0151 tev\u00e9kenys\u00e9g\u00e9nek, valamint a m\u0171v\u00e9szeti k\u00f6z\u00e9letben v\u00e9gzett munk\u00e1j\u00e1nak elismer\u00e9s\u00e9\u00e9rt j\u00e1r\u00f3 legmagasabb magyar \u00e1llami kit\u00fcntet\u00e9sben, Kossuth-d\u00edjban r\u00e9szes\u00fclt.<\/p>{:}{:en}Gy\u00f6rgy Vashegyi<\/strong> earned a degree in conducting studies at the Budapest Academy of Music in 1993. His interest in historical performance was greatly influenced by Helmuth Rilling, John Eliot Gardiner, John Toll, Malcolm Bilson and Simon Standage.\r\n\r\nVashegyi has been a regular guest conductor for several Hungarian symphony orchestras and the Hungarian State Opera since the year 2000.\r\n\r\nHe founded the Purcell Choir and the Orfeo Zenekar in 1991 and has been responsible for countless important opera and oratorio productions, as well as cantata and orchestral programmes.\r\n\r\nHis name is associated with dozens of contemporary world and Hungarian premieres, while he has also released some 30 albums with his groups. Since 2014, he has developed a close relationship with the Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles, releasing the following French Baroque recordings through the Glossa music label: the world premier of Rameau\u2019s Les F\u00eates de Polymnie \u2013 Ballet h\u00e9roique<\/em>; the album Mondonville: Grands Motets<\/em>; a world premiere of Isb\u00e9<\/em>; the opera pastiche Un op\u00e9ra pour trois rois<\/em> and a theatrical performance of Rameau\u2019s Nais<\/em>.\r\n\r\nVashegyi has taught at the Academy of Music since 1992 and is currently an associate professor. He was awarded the Liszt Award in 2008 and the Knight\u2019s Cross of the Hungarian Order of Merit in 2015, and has been a member of the Hungarian Academy of Arts since 2013 and its president since October 2017.\r\n
