Gy\u00f6rgy Vashegyi<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\nFelix Mendelssohn (1809\u20131847) was a descendant of a highly cultured and exceedingly wealthy Berlin Jewish bourgeois family that converted to Protestantism and played a defining role in the German Enlightenment of the 18th and 19th centuries. Hailed by Goethe as \u201cthe second Mozart\u201d, Mendelssohn\u2019s oeuvre includes an important and outstanding chapter in the form of his sacred choral works, which are receptive to Baroque influences while being rooted in classical formal culture and Romantic sensibility. Performances of pieces from this area of his output are, however, rarely heard on concert programmes. On this occasion, a full concert-length selection from his religious compositions will be heard: in the first half, four shorter works are to be performed, the first of which is the Kyrie in D minor<\/em>. The three that follow are set to German chorale or psalm texts. After the interval comes the eight-movement Lauda Sion<\/em>, composed in 1846 and based on a medieval Latin sequence. The conductor for the evening is the Kossuth Prize-winning Gy\u00f6rgy Vashegyi, founder and director of the Purcell Choir and Orfeo Orchestra and general music director of the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra. He has long devoted particular attention to Mendelssohn\u2019s sacred works. Born in Buenos Aires, the soprano Mercedes Arcuri, who is primarily celebrated for her Baroque repertoire, is a highly regarded figure in the international singing world. Meanwhile, Eszter Balogh, Zolt\u00e1n Megyesi and Zsombor Cserm\u00e9nyi are versatile favourites of Hungarian His interest in historical performance was greatly influenced by Helmuth Rilling, John Eliot Gardiner, John Toll, Malcolm Bilson and Simon Standage.\r\n\r\nVashegyi has been a regular guest conductor for several Hungarian symphony orchestras and the Hungarian State Opera since the year 2000.\r\n\r\nHe founded the Purcell Choir and the Orfeo Zenekar in 1991 and has been responsible for countless important opera and oratorio productions, as well as cantata and orchestral programmes.\r\n\r\nHis name is associated with dozens of contemporary world and Hungarian premieres, while he has also released some 30 albums with his groups. Since 2014, he has developed a close relationship with the Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles, releasing the following French Baroque recordings through the Glossa music label: the world premier of Rameau\u2019s Les F\u00eates de Polymnie \u2013 Ballet h\u00e9roique<\/em>; the album Mondonville: Grands Motets<\/em>; a world premiere of Isb\u00e9<\/em>; the opera pastiche Un op\u00e9ra pour trois rois<\/em> and a theatrical performance of Rameau\u2019s Nais<\/em>.\r\n\r\nVashegyi has taught at the Academy of Music since 1992 and is currently an associate professor.
