Richard Wagner\u2019s (1813\u20131883) overture to his German romantic opera Die Meistersinger von N\u00fcrnberg<\/em> (1867) has become one of the most popular pieces in the concert repertoire. Held in similarly high regard is the Adagietto<\/em> from Gustav Mahler\u2019s (1860\u20131911) Symphony No. 5 <\/em>(1901\/02), a wordless declaration of love to his partner Alma that already represents the turn-of-the-century style. Richard Strauss\u2019s (1864\u20131949) Vier letzte Lieder<\/em> (Four Last Songs, 1948) \u2013 not grouped into a cycle by the composer himself \u2013 comprise four late songs (one setting a poem by Eichendorff and three poems by Hesse) and transport us into the years following World War Two. After the interval, we return to the great era of German romanticism with the Overture<\/em> to Robert Schumann\u2019s (1810\u20131856) unsuccessful opera Genoveva<\/em> (1850), which has taken on an independent life of its own, together with the composer\u2019s far more successful sole Piano Concerto<\/em> from five years previously (1845). The outstanding soprano Katalin Szutr\u00e9ly is equally at home in every stylistic period, though audiences most often encounter her in early-music productions. D\u00e9nes V\u00e1rjon\u2019s piano playing is celebrated by audiences the world over, while Gy\u00f6rgy Vashegyi, founder and director of the Purcell Choir and Orfeo Orchestra, has been the general music director of the Hungarian National Philharmonic since October 2024. m\u00e1rcius 15-i nemzeti \u00fcnnep\u00fcnk alkalm\u00e1b\u00f3l \u00e9rt\u00e9kteremt\u0151 tev\u00e9kenys\u00e9g\u00e9nek, valamint a m\u0171v\u00e9szeti k\u00f6z\u00e9letben v\u00e9gzett munk\u00e1j\u00e1nak elismer\u00e9s\u00e9\u00e9rt j\u00e1r\u00f3 legmagasabb magyar \u00e1llami kit\u00fcntet\u00e9sben, Kossuth-d\u00edjban r\u00e9szes\u00fclt.<\/p>{:}{:en}Gy\u00f6rgy Vashegyi<\/strong> earned a degree in conducting studies at the Budapest Academy of Music in 1993. His interest in historical performance was greatly influenced by Helmuth Rilling, John Eliot Gardiner, John Toll, Malcolm Bilson and Simon Standage.\r\n\r\nVashegyi has been a regular guest conductor for several Hungarian symphony orchestras and the Hungarian State Opera since the year 2000.\r\n\r\nHe founded the Purcell Choir and the Orfeo Zenekar in 1991 and has been responsible for countless important opera and oratorio productions, as well as cantata and orchestral programmes.\r\n\r\nHis name is associated with dozens of contemporary world and Hungarian premieres, while he has also released some 30 albums with his groups. Since 2014, he has developed a close relationship with the Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles, releasing the following French Baroque recordings through the Glossa music label: the world premier of Rameau\u2019s Les F\u00eates de Polymnie \u2013 Ballet h\u00e9roique<\/em>; the album Mondonville: Grands Motets<\/em>; a world premiere of Isb\u00e9<\/em>; the opera pastiche Un op\u00e9ra pour trois rois<\/em> and a theatrical performance of Rameau\u2019s Nais<\/em>.\r\n\r\nVashegyi has taught at the Academy of Music since 1992 and is currently an associate professor. He was awarded the Liszt Award in 2008 and the Knight\u2019s Cross of the Hungarian Order of Merit in 2015, and has been a member of the Hungarian Academy of Arts since 2013 and its president since October 2017.\r\n
