Gy\u00f6rgy Vashegyi<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\nOne of the most popular works in Ern\u0151 Dohn\u00e1nyi\u2019s (1877\u20131960) oeuvre, the Symphonic Minutes<\/em> was written in 1933. This suite of five short movements is typified above all by its variety of character, elegance, humour and colourful orchestration. B\u00e9la Bart\u00f3k (1881\u20131945) composed his swan song, the unfinished Piano Concerto No. 3<\/em> (1945), while in American exile, already gravely ill and in the shadow of death. The final seventeen bars of the work were orchestrated by his young friend and pupil, Tibor Serly. Radiating Mozartian clarity and dedicated to the composer\u2019s wife, Ditta P\u00e1sztory, the concerto is a document of the classical turn in Bart\u00f3k\u2019s late style. Although Johannes Brahms\u2019s (1833\u20131897) Symphony No. 4<\/em> (1884) is not, chronologically speaking, a late work \u2013 the composer was 51 when he wrote it and with 13 years of life still ahead of him \u2013 its reserved, introspective and meditative character nevertheless creates an unmistakable sense of maturity. After the austere Allegro non troppo<\/em> and the lyrical, autumnal nature poetry of the Andante moderato<\/em>, the scherzo indulges in raw, boisterous humour, while the finale, a passacaglia based on a theme by Bach, unfolds with unrelenting gravity and archaic grandeur. Mih\u00e1ly Berecz (b. 1997), who has enjoyed international success, is one of the finest Hungarian pianists of the new generation. Gy\u00f6rgy Vashegyi (b. 1970), a Kossuth Prize laureate and founder-director of the Purcell Choir and Orfeo Orchestra, has been general music director of the Hungarian National Philharmonic since October His interest in historical performance was greatly influenced by Helmuth Rilling, John Eliot Gardiner, John Toll, Malcolm Bilson and Simon Standage.\r\n\r\nVashegyi has been a regular guest conductor for several Hungarian symphony orchestras and the Hungarian State Opera since the year 2000.\r\n\r\nHe founded the Purcell Choir and the Orfeo Zenekar in 1991 and has been responsible for countless important opera and oratorio productions, as well as cantata and orchestral programmes.\r\n\r\nHis name is associated with dozens of contemporary world and Hungarian premieres, while he has also released some 30 albums with his groups. Since 2014, he has developed a close relationship with the Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles, releasing the following French Baroque recordings through the Glossa music label: the world premier of Rameau\u2019s Les F\u00eates de Polymnie \u2013 Ballet h\u00e9roique<\/em>; the album Mondonville: Grands Motets<\/em>; a world premiere of Isb\u00e9<\/em>; the opera pastiche Un op\u00e9ra pour trois rois<\/em> and a theatrical performance of Rameau\u2019s Nais<\/em>.\r\n\r\nVashegyi has taught at the Academy of Music since 1992 and is currently an associate professor.
