This year\u2019s Christmas Concert by the Hungarian National Philharmonic does not offer a single large-scale work, but instead serves up a colourful selection of compositions representing different eras and styles. An exalted festive atmosphere in the first half will be conjured up by the joyful and dynamic yet spiritually uplifting and radiant music of Johann Sebastian Bach\u2019s (1685\u20131750) Christmas Oratorio<\/em>, Cantatas 1 and 2: Jauchzet, frohlocket<\/em> and Und es waren Hirten<\/em>. Robert Schumann\u2019s (1810\u20131856) Nachtlied<\/em> (Night Song), composed in 1849 to a poem by Friedrich Hebbel, is scored for an eight-part mixed choir and orchestra. The Christmas cantata Une cantate de No\u00ebl<\/em> by the Swiss composer Arthur Honegger (1892\u20131955) dates from 1953 and was his final composition. This three-part work, written for baritone solo, children\u2019s choir, mixed choir, organ and orchestra, narrates the story of Jesus\u2019s birth. Dorottya L\u00e1ng, Bernhard Berchtold and Zsombor Cserm\u00e9nyi are dedicated performers of the oratorio repertoire who will be familiar to the audience from Gy\u00f6rgy Vashegyi\u2019s productions. Gy\u00f6rgy Vashegyi, founder and director of the Purcell Choir and Orfeo Orchestra, is not only a central figure in Hungary\u2019s historically informed early music scene, his artistic interests also span the entire history of music, transcending genres and stylistic boundaries. In addition to the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra and the Hungarian National Choir (choirmaster: Csaba Somos), the concert also features the choir of the Zolt\u00e1n Kod\u00e1ly Hungarian Choir School, founded in 1988 by Ferenc Sapszon Jr., with Borb\u00e1la Sapszon as its 2024. m\u00e1rcius 15-i nemzeti \u00fcnnep\u00fcnk alkalm\u00e1b\u00f3l \u00e9rt\u00e9kteremt\u0151 tev\u00e9kenys\u00e9g\u00e9nek, valamint a m\u0171v\u00e9szeti k\u00f6z\u00e9letben v\u00e9gzett munk\u00e1j\u00e1nak elismer\u00e9s\u00e9\u00e9rt j\u00e1r\u00f3 legmagasabb magyar \u00e1llami kit\u00fcntet\u00e9sben, Kossuth-d\u00edjban r\u00e9szes\u00fclt.<\/p>{:}{:en}Gy\u00f6rgy Vashegyi<\/strong> earned a degree in conducting studies at the Budapest Academy of Music in 1993. His interest in historical performance was greatly influenced by Helmuth Rilling, John Eliot Gardiner, John Toll, Malcolm Bilson and Simon Standage.\r\n\r\nVashegyi has been a regular guest conductor for several Hungarian symphony orchestras and the Hungarian State Opera since the year 2000.\r\n\r\nHe founded the Purcell Choir and the Orfeo Zenekar in 1991 and has been responsible for countless important opera and oratorio productions, as well as cantata and orchestral programmes.\r\n\r\nHis name is associated with dozens of contemporary world and Hungarian premieres, while he has also released some 30 albums with his groups. Since 2014, he has developed a close relationship with the Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles, releasing the following French Baroque recordings through the Glossa music label: the world premier of Rameau\u2019s Les F\u00eates de Polymnie \u2013 Ballet h\u00e9roique<\/em>; the album Mondonville: Grands Motets<\/em>; a world premiere of Isb\u00e9<\/em>; the opera pastiche Un op\u00e9ra pour trois rois<\/em> and a theatrical performance of Rameau\u2019s Nais<\/em>.\r\n\r\nVashegyi has taught at the Academy of Music since 1992 and is currently an associate professor. He was awarded the Liszt Award in 2008 and the Knight\u2019s Cross of the Hungarian Order of Merit in 2015, and has been a member of the Hungarian Academy of Arts since 2013 and its president since October 2017.\r\n
