Gy\u00f6rgy Vashegyi<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\nZolt\u00e1n Kocsis died ten years ago on 6 November 2016, at the age of 64. As general music director of the Hungarian National Philharmonic, he placed the long-established orchestra and choir on entirely new foundations, enabling the musicians working under him to deliver world-class performances. He took up the leadership of the orchestra in 1997, and during the nearly two decades he spent with us, he not only stamped his uncompromising attitude on every joint endeavour as a conductor, but also enriched the ensemble\u2019s history indelibly as a pianist, arranger and composer. Two works by Johannes Brahms (1833\u20131897) will be performed at the memorial concert in tribute to his artistry and personality. The rarely heard Begr\u00e4bnisgesang<\/em> (Burial Song) was composed in 1858, two years after Schumann\u2019s death. Its distinctive feature is that the chorale text, set with puritanical discipline in keeping with Protestant tradition, is sung by the choir accompanied by a wind ensemble. Ein deutsches Requiem<\/em> (A German Requiem), one of the greatest and at the same time most unconventional works in its genre, was completed in 1868, with Brahms selecting its text from the German translation of the Luther Bible. The soloists will be Polina Pasztircs\u00e1k, a member of the Hungarian singing community who has achieved international success, and the excellent German baritone Julian Orlishausen, at home in every genre and representing the middle generation. The Kossuth Prize-winning Gy\u00f6rgy Vashegyi, founder and leader of the Purcell Choir and Orfeo Orchestra, has been the general music director of the Hungarian National Philharmonic as a successor to Zolt\u00e1n Kocsis since the autumn of 2024. m\u00e1rcius 15-i nemzeti \u00fcnnep\u00fcnk alkalm\u00e1b\u00f3l \u00e9rt\u00e9kteremt\u0151 tev\u00e9kenys\u00e9g\u00e9nek, valamint a m\u0171v\u00e9szeti k\u00f6z\u00e9letben v\u00e9gzett munk\u00e1j\u00e1nak elismer\u00e9s\u00e9\u00e9rt j\u00e1r\u00f3 legmagasabb magyar \u00e1llami kit\u00fcntet\u00e9sben, Kossuth-d\u00edjban r\u00e9szes\u00fclt.<\/p>{:}{:en}Gy\u00f6rgy Vashegyi<\/strong> earned a degree in conducting studies at the Budapest Academy of Music in 1993. His interest in historical performance was greatly influenced by Helmuth Rilling, John Eliot Gardiner, John Toll, Malcolm Bilson and Simon Standage.\r\n\r\nVashegyi has been a regular guest conductor for several Hungarian symphony orchestras and the Hungarian State Opera since the year 2000.\r\n\r\nHe founded the Purcell Choir and the Orfeo Zenekar in 1991 and has been responsible for countless important opera and oratorio productions, as well as cantata and orchestral programmes.\r\n\r\nHis name is associated with dozens of contemporary world and Hungarian premieres, while he has also released some 30 albums with his groups. Since 2014, he has developed a close relationship with the Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles, releasing the following French Baroque recordings through the Glossa music label: the world premier of Rameau\u2019s Les F\u00eates de Polymnie \u2013 Ballet h\u00e9roique<\/em>; the album Mondonville: Grands Motets<\/em>; a world premiere of Isb\u00e9<\/em>; the opera pastiche Un op\u00e9ra pour trois rois<\/em> and a theatrical performance of Rameau\u2019s Nais<\/em>.\r\n\r\nVashegyi has taught at the Academy of Music since 1992 and is currently an associate professor.
