The Hungarian National Choir, one of the country\u2019s leading professional choral groups, is turning 40 years old. Founded in 1986 by Mikl\u00f3s P\u00e1szti, its artistic activity has been directed by Csaba Somos since 2016. Conducted by its choirmaster, the choir will give a jubilee concert on the third evening of the P\u00e1szti season ticket, with one Brahms piece and two Mendelssohn works on the programme. The hymn H\u00f6r mein Bitten, <\/em>the Schicksalslied <\/em>and the Symphony No. 2<\/em>, also known as Lobgesang<\/em>, are all rarely heard masterpieces that are always worth dusting off. The collaborators on the night are the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra and three outstanding representatives of Hungary\u2019s vocal elite: Kinga Kriszta, Lilla Horti and Szabolcs Brickner.<\/p>\n

For the 2025\/2026 season, the P\u00e1szti season ticket of the Hungarian National Philharmonic includes not one but two anniversary concerts: after we paid tribute to our former choir director, the 80-year-old M\u00e1ty\u00e1s Antal, in late October, the time will come in March for the ensemble itself to blow out the birthday candles, 40 of them in all. Founded in 1986 by the composer and choir director Mikl\u00f3s P\u00e1szti \u2013 then under the name of the Hungarian State Choir \u2013 the chorus, which later operated for a quarter of a century under the leadership of M\u00e1ty\u00e1s Antal, is now preparing for its independent concerts and those with the Hungarian National Philharmonic under the baton of Csaba Somos, who has been its choir director since 2016. On the Brahms-Mendelssohn programme of the anniversary concert, we will hear rarely heard masterpieces in which the chorus has an important role to play. The evening will be crowned by the participation of the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra, while the soloists Kinga Kriszta, Lilla Horti and Szabolcs Brickner will represent the cream of our current crop of singers.<\/p>\n

He also completed master classes with Johannes Moesus, J\u00fcrgen J\u00fcrgens and Yuri Simonov. He has been active as a choir leader since the age of 22 and served for nearly 17 years as the choirmaster of the Vasas Ensemble Chorus. In 2002, he founded the Lajos Vass Chamber Choir, which he led until 2017. He has also worked as the music director of Debrecen\u2019s Csokonai Theatre and later the National Theatre of P\u00e9cs, as well as holding the position of chief choirmaster of the Hungarian Radio Choir. He has appeared as a guest conductor and choirmaster with numerous Hungarian symphonic orchestras and professional choirs. Somos has also made guest appearances with orchestras in other countries, including the Salerno<\/em> Philharmonic Orchestra<\/em> in Italy and, in Japan, the Sakata Philharmonic Orchestra. He is frequently invited to Spain, Italy, Russia, Romania, Greece, Macedonia, Austria, Germany and China as both a choirmaster and conductor. A teacher at the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music, he is regularly asked to serve as a jury member of musical competitions and festivals. He serves as the vice president of the Hungarian Association<\/em> of Choirs, Orchestras and Folk Ensembles (K\u00d3TA). His professional work was recognised with a Rub\u00e1nyi Award, which was followed by a Liszt Award in 2014. In 2015, he earned his DLA, graduating summa cum laude.
