M\u00e1ty\u00e1s Antal, the former choir director of the Hungarian National Choir, is turning 80. This versatile musician, who led the choir for a quarter-century from 1990 to 2016, has a double connection to the Hungarian National Philharmonic, having previously been a flautist with its predecessor, the State Concert Orchestra, for decades. To mark the occasion, he is not the one receiving but giving the gift, by conducting a celebratory concert first featuring \u2013 as a playful nod to his age \u2013 Haydn\u2019s Symphony No. 80 in D minor<\/em>, followed by exceptionally significant oratorical works from Bart\u00f3k and Stravinsky, Cantata Profana<\/em> and the Symphony of<\/em> Psalms<\/em>. The solo parts in Bart\u00f3k\u2019s piece will be performed by two outstanding figures on the Hungarian vocal scene, Boldizs\u00e1r L\u00e1szl\u00f3 and Mikl\u00f3s Sebesty\u00e9n.<\/p>\n

While specialization is a defining feature of our era, there remain some prominent musical figures who excel in producing memorable output in multiple disciplines. M\u00e1ty\u00e1s Antal is one such individual. In his student years, he played piano, flute, double bass and percussion, before earning degrees in the flute and choral conducting at the Liszt Academy, and subsequently studying conducting at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels. His career is accordingly rich and varied. From 1967 to 1986, he was a flautist with the State Concert Orchestra (now Hungarian National Philharmonic); from 1990 to 2016, he served as choir director of the Hungarian National Choir, while also working continuously as a conductor and choir director with ensembles like the Miskolc Symphony Orchestra and the Budapest Chorus. He is turning 80 in 2025 and we are celebrating this milestone with a concert. Under his baton, the National Philharmonic Orchestra will first perform Haydn\u2019s Symphony No. 80<\/em>, followed by two defining 20th-century oratorical works: Bart\u00f3k\u2019s Cantata Profana<\/em> and Stravinsky\u2019s Symphony of Psalms<\/em>, featuring the Hungarian National Choir, with Boldizs\u00e1r L\u00e1szl\u00f3 and Mikl\u00f3s Sebesty\u00e9n the soloists for the Bart\u00f3k piece.<\/p>\n

Named after the founder and former leader of the Hungarian State Choir, the predecessor of the National Choir, the P\u00e1szti season ticket unsurprisingly offers a rich bounty of vocal music: early music and contemporary pieces, as well as a cappella works and oratorical masterpieces, all courtesy of composers from both Hungary and elsewhere.<\/p>\n

Conducting the first concert will be M\u00e1ty\u00e1s Antal, who headed the Hungarian National Choir for a quarter of a century and is turning 80 this year. After appropriately kicking off the occasion with Haydn\u2019s 80th symphony, he will then go on to lead the ensemble in two legendary masterpieces: Bart\u00f3k\u2019s Cantata Profana<\/em> and Stravinsky\u2019s Symphony of Psalms<\/em>. For the second concert, current choirmaster Csaba Somos invites music lovers on a journey through Italy with works (where either the composer or the theme is Italian) by Bruno Bettinelli, Pietro Clausetti, Morten Lauridsen, Jonathan Dove, Willem Jeths and Tam\u00e1s Beischer-Maty\u00f3.<\/p>\n

The third concert commemorates yet another birthday, this time that of the Hungarian National Choir itself, which to celebrate the 40th anniversary of its founding will perform \u2013 again with Somos wielding the baton \u2013 works by Brahms and Mendelssohn: the former\u2019s Schicksalslied<\/em> (\u201cSong of Destiny\u201d) and the latter\u2019s anthem H\u00f6r\u2019 mein Bitten<\/em> and the massive but rarely heard Lobgesang<\/em>, the \u201cSong of Praise\u201d catalogued as Mendelssohn\u2019s second symphony<\/em>. The soloists for this evening will be Polina Pasztircs\u00e1k, Lilla Horti and Szabolcs Brickner.<\/p>\n

The final event in the subscription will be truly sensational. The 2025\/2026 season of the Hungarian National Philharmonic features several remarkable events, one of which is Massenet\u2019s oratorio La Vierge<\/em>, now being presented for the first time ever in Hungary, with Gy\u00f6rgy Vashegyi on the podium. Taking the stage to sing the title role will be the outstanding French mezzo-soprano Aude Extremo.<\/p>\n

He was born into a musical family, and as a young child, studied both piano and flute. Later, he learned the double bass and percussion. He was a student in the flute faculty of the B\u00e9la Bart\u00f3k Music College in Budapest, and later graduated from the Franz Liszt Academy from both the flute and choir conducting faculties. Until 1990 he was a flautist at the Hungarian State Concert Orchestra. He began conducting in the second half of the 1970's, being deputy conductor of the Miskolc Symphony Orchestra, and then choir master of the Sz\u00e9kesfeh\u00e9rv\u00e1r Symphony Orchestra. From 1984, he was the leader of the Budapest Chorus. In 1986, he became a repetiteur at the State Orchestra, a post he only left when he was made choir master of the State Choir (now National Choir). He has performed as a conductor in virtually all of the European countries and has also worked in Japan.
