For the opening concert of the 2025\/2026 season, the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra and its Kossuth Prize-winning chief music director Gy\u00f6rgy Vashegyi invite the audience first and foremost on a pleasant retrospective by performing Le Roi d\u2019Ys<\/em> overture from Lalo\u2019s opera, which will cast our minds back to the recent successful premiere of the work in Hungary. In playing the Dohn\u00e1nyi work Ruralia Hungarica<\/em> and Bart\u00f3k\u2019s mystery opera, Bluebeard\u2019s Castle<\/em>, the orchestra will, as is always the case for season-opening concerts, pay tribute to the lasting values of Hungarian musical culture. In the two soloists for the opera, Dorottya L\u00e1ng and G\u00e1bor Bretz, we welcome two outstanding singers who are also celebrated outside Hungary.<\/p>\n

At its season-opening concerts, it is customary for the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra to pay tribute to the lasting values of Hungarian musical culture, but it is not unheard of for a significant work of the European canon to be heard in the spirit of openness. Under the baton of its Kossuth Prize-winning chief music director Gy\u00f6rgy Vashegyi, the first evening of the 2025\/2026 season will open with just such a piece, the Le Roi d\u2019Ys<\/em> overture from \u00c9douard Lalo\u2019s opera. Although it achieved great success on its premiere in 1888, the work is rarely heard today but was very well received by the M\u00fcpa Budapest audience in January 2024, when the opera was performed as its Hungarian premiere. The performance of the overture here will be a handy reminder of the fact that a defining aspect of the work of the Hungarian National Philharmonic is to discover unknown treasures. Dohn\u00e1nyi\u2019s Ruralia Hungarica<\/em> and Bart\u00f3k\u2019s mystery opera, Bluebeard\u2019s Castle<\/em>, two unquestionable gems of Hungarian music history, will then be heard \u2013 with the opera\u2019s two soloists being Dorottya L\u00e1ng and G\u00e1bor Bretz, two members of the Hungarian singing community who have achieved international 2024. m\u00e1rcius 15-i nemzeti \u00fcnnep\u00fcnk alkalm\u00e1b\u00f3l \u00e9rt\u00e9kteremt\u0151 tev\u00e9kenys\u00e9g\u00e9nek, valamint a m\u0171v\u00e9szeti k\u00f6z\u00e9letben v\u00e9gzett munk\u00e1j\u00e1nak elismer\u00e9s\u00e9\u00e9rt j\u00e1r\u00f3 legmagasabb magyar \u00e1llami kit\u00fcntet\u00e9sben, Kossuth-d\u00edjban r\u00e9szes\u00fclt.<\/p>{:}{:en}Gy\u00f6rgy Vashegyi<\/strong> earned a degree in conducting studies at the Budapest Academy of Music in 1993. His interest in historical performance was greatly influenced by Helmuth Rilling, John Eliot Gardiner, John Toll, Malcolm Bilson and Simon Standage.\r\n\r\nVashegyi has been a regular guest conductor for several Hungarian symphony orchestras and the Hungarian State Opera since the year 2000.\r\n\r\nHe founded the Purcell Choir and the Orfeo Zenekar in 1991 and has been responsible for countless important opera and oratorio productions, as well as cantata and orchestral programmes.\r\n\r\nHis name is associated with dozens of contemporary world and Hungarian premieres, while he has also released some 30 albums with his groups. Since 2014, he has developed a close relationship with the Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles, releasing the following French Baroque recordings through the Glossa music label: the world premier of Rameau\u2019s Les F\u00eates de Polymnie \u2013 Ballet h\u00e9roique<\/em>; the album Mondonville: Grands Motets<\/em>; a world premiere of Isb\u00e9<\/em>; the opera pastiche Un op\u00e9ra pour trois rois<\/em> and a theatrical performance of Rameau\u2019s Nais<\/em>.\r\n\r\nVashegyi has taught at the Academy of Music since 1992 and is currently an associate professor. He was awarded the Liszt Award in 2008 and the Knight\u2019s Cross of the Hungarian Order of Merit in 2015, and has been a member of the Hungarian Academy of Arts since 2013 and its president since October 2017.\r\n
