The treasure from music history that the ensemble is now presenting under the baton of Gy\u00f6rgy Vashegyi and as part of their longstanding collaboration with Palazzetto Bru Zane, which has already yielded several \u2013 David\u2019s <em>Herculaneum<\/em>, Massenet\u2019s <em>Werther<\/em> and Lalo\u2019s <em>Le roi d\u2019Ys<\/em> \u2013 successful productions, in a concert-format performance is a mythologically themed opera by Ambroise Thomas (1811\u20131896). <em>Psych\u00e9<\/em> (1857) features an international cast of world-famous soloists.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The successful French opera composer Ambroise Thomas (1811\u20131896), a contemporary of Gounod and the great generation of Romantics, composed some twenty works for the musical stage. However, posterity has so far only come to appreciate two of them: <em>Mignon<\/em>, based on a novel by Goethe, and <em>Hamlet<\/em>, adapted from Shakespeare\u2019s drama. In collaboration with Palazzetto Bru Zane, the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra and Choir are now presenting the composer\u2019s three-act 1857 opera <em>Psych\u00e9<\/em>, with the aim of rediscovering and recording it as part of their \u2019French Opera\u2019 series. This is a chance to hear an unusual work, as Romantic composers mostly avoided the mythological subjects so favoured in the Baroque era. Thomas, however, set to music the mythological story of Psych\u00e9, who falls victim to her own beauty, and \u00c9ros, who attempts to save her. <em>Psych\u00e9<\/em> will constitute the fourth work that the Hungarian National Philharmonic has presented together with Palazzetto Bru Zane, after F\u00e9licien David\u2019s <em>Herculanum,<\/em> Jules Massenet\u2019s <em>Werther<\/em> and \u00c9douard Lalo\u2019s <em>Le roi d\u2019Ys<\/em>. This production of Thomas\u2019s opera conducted by Gy\u00f6rgy Vashegyi features an international cast of world-famous soloists.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" His interest in historical performance was greatly influenced by Helmuth Rilling, John Eliot Gardiner, John Toll, Malcolm Bilson and Simon Standage.\r\n\r\nVashegyi has been a regular guest conductor for several Hungarian symphony orchestras and the Hungarian State Opera since the year 2000.\r\n\r\nHe founded the Purcell Choir and the Orfeo Zenekar in 1991 and has been responsible for countless important opera and oratorio productions, as well as cantata and orchestral programmes.\r\n\r\nHis name is associated with dozens of contemporary world and Hungarian premieres, while he has also released some 30 albums with his groups. Since 2014, he has developed a close relationship with the Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles, releasing the following French Baroque recordings through the Glossa music label: the world premier of Rameau\u2019s <em>Les F\u00eates de Polymnie \u2013 Ballet h\u00e9roique<\/em>; the album <em>Mondonville: Grands Motets<\/em>; a world premiere of <em>Isb\u00e9<\/em>; the opera pastiche <em>Un op\u00e9ra pour trois rois<\/em> and a theatrical performance of Rameau\u2019s <em>Nais<\/em>.\r\n\r\nVashegyi has taught at the Academy of Music since 1992 and is currently an associate professor.
