To show his gratitude, he composed the Academic Festival Overture<\/em>, a treatment of student songs. The Violin Concerto<\/em> (1878) too has personal elements in its background: the composer wrote this work for his closest friend, Joseph Joachim, whose Hungarianness is alluded to by the rhythmic theme of the finale. This concert kicking off the season for the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra closes with one of Bart\u00f3k\u2019s finest works: Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta<\/em> (1936). Taking the podium will be chief music director and recent Kossuth Prize-winner Gy\u00f6rgy Vashegyi, with the world-famous virtuoso Krist\u00f3f Bar\u00e1ti serving as the soloist.<\/strong><\/p>\n After Brahms received an honorary doctorate from the University of Breslau in 1880, he learned that it was insufficient simply to thank the faculty for the gesture: he was also expected to write a piece of music for the occasion. So he decided to have a bit of fun with the professors. He composed an overture, ending with the lofty Gaudemus igitur<\/em>, but only after a series of mischievous student songs emerge in the music. His Violin Concerto<\/em>, on the other hand, remains sublime throughout, inspired by one of the most exalted feelings of them all: friendship. In this case, for the soloist J\u00f3zsef (Joseph) Joachim whose ethnic origins are alluded to by the Hungarian theme of the finale. The first part of the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra\u2019s season-opening concert looks at Europe through the works of Brahms, but after the interval, turns its attention to one of the greatest Hungarians: Bart\u00f3k. His Music for Strings Percussion and Celesta<\/em> simultaneously pays homage to the Classical tradition with its symphony-like form and to the Baroque with its contrapuntal structure. His interest in historical performance was greatly influenced by Helmuth Rilling, John Eliot Gardiner, John Toll, Malcolm Bilson and Simon Standage.\r\n\r\nVashegyi has been a regular guest conductor for several Hungarian symphony orchestras and the Hungarian State Opera since the year 2000.\r\n\r\nHe founded the Purcell Choir and the Orfeo Zenekar in 1991 and has been responsible for countless important opera and oratorio productions, as well as cantata and orchestral programmes.\r\n\r\nHis name is associated with dozens of contemporary world and Hungarian premieres, while he has also released some 30 albums with his groups. Since 2014, he has developed a close relationship with the Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles, releasing the following French Baroque recordings through the Glossa music label: the world premier of Rameau\u2019s Les F\u00eates de Polymnie \u2013 Ballet h\u00e9roique<\/em>; the album Mondonville: Grands Motets<\/em>; a world premiere of Isb\u00e9<\/em>; the opera pastiche Un op\u00e9ra pour trois rois<\/em> and a theatrical performance of Rameau\u2019s Nais<\/em>.\r\n\r\nVashegyi has taught at the Academy of Music since 1992 and is currently an associate professor.
