Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra <\/strong><\/p>\n Conductor: Ken-Ichiro Kobayashi\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n Very little music condenses so much desire and passion, and also projects so many visions on to the canvas of our imagination, as Berlioz\u2019s Symphonie fantastique<\/em>, one of the greatest masterpieces of the early Romantic era. Not every conductor is capable of fully conveying the extremes of this composition, but Ken-Ichiro Kobayashi, an old favourite of Hungarian audiences and the winner of Hungarian Television\u2019s First International Conducting Competition, certainly is.<\/p>\n Hector Berlioz (1803\u20131869) was seven or eight years older than the members of the great Romantic generation \u2013 who were born around 1810-11 \u2013 so it is understandable that the most famous piece of his career, the Symphonie fantastique<\/em> (1830), was composed when Schumann, Chopin and Liszt were still writing their early works. This symphony is one of the very first works of authentic programme music, and has a powerful desire to paint pictures and moods. Reveries \u2013 Passions<\/em>, A Ball, Scene in the Fields, March to the Scaffold, Dream of a Witches\u2019 Sabbath<\/em> \u2013 the titles of the movements reveal the variable moods and imaginative modes of expression in the music.<\/p>\n The first part of this concert prior to Berlioz\u2019s symphony consists of two shorter orchestral works.\u00a0 Beehoven\u2018s\u00a0Egmont Overture<\/em>\u00a0is an expression of the elemental desire for freedom, while Berlioz\u2018s\u00a0Roman Carnival Overture<\/em>\u00a0is characterized by an overwhelming sense of joie de vivre, energy and festive ebullience<\/p>\n Ken-Ichiro Kobayashi was born in Iwaki in 1940. His work became widely known in Hungary after he won a prestigious Budapest music competition in 1974. After the death of J\u00e1nos Ferencsik, Kobayashi was the principal conductor of the Hungarian State Symphony Orchestra from the late 1980s to the early 1990s. Today, he is conductor laureate of the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra. It was in 1974 when he studied gaining international attention after receiving first prize at the International Conductors Competition of the Hungarian Television. Since then he has gained a reputation by conducting major orchestras in countries such as Germany, Austria and the UK. He was appointed Principal Conductor of the Hungary State Symphony Orchestra (Hungary National Philharmonic Orchestra nowaday) in 1987, and General Director of the Orchestra in 1992. In 1994, he received \"Middle Cross with the Star of the Order of the Republic of Hungary\".
