On the night before Christmas Eve, what else could the Hungarian National Philharmonic and the Hungarian National Choir perform to create a sublime festive mood other than the music of Bach? In addition to the first three cantatas of the Christmas Oratorio<\/em>, we will also get to hear another cantata by the great Baroque composer that is also related to the celebration of Christmas. Conducting the programme will be the most capable Hungarian conductor of the early music repertoire, Gy\u00f6rgy Vashegyi, and the cast of vocal soloists are also among the country\u2019s very finest artists working in the area of historically informed performance .<\/p>\n

Bach\u2019s Christmas Oratorio<\/em> comprises six cantatas, and not only can they be played separately, they were never played one after the other over the course of a single performance in their own time either, as they are pieces intended for use in church services, with each of them applying to a different day of the Christmas holidays and reflecting the thinking and spiritual content that applies to that day. This concert features the first half of the oratorio, meaning the first three cantatas: Jauchzet, frohlocket, auf, preiset die Tage<\/em> (\u201cShout for joy, exult, rise up, praise the day\u201d), Und es waren Hirten in derselben Gegend<\/em> (\u201cAnd there were shepherds in the same environ\u201d) and Herrscher des Himmels, erh\u00f6re das Lallen <\/em>(\u201cRuler of heaven, hear our babble\u201d) relate to the first three days of Christmas, S\u00fc\u00dfer Trost, mein Jesus k\u00f6mmt\u00a0<\/em>(\u201cSweet comfort, my Jesus comes\u201d), being performed between the second and third cantatas was also written for the third day of Christmas.<\/p>\n

The four soloists \u2013 Adri\u00e1na Kalafszky, Eszter Balogh, Zolt\u00e1n Megyesi and L\u00f3r\u00e1nt Najbauer \u2013 are regular contributors to productions conducted by Gy\u00f6rgy Vashegyi, and thus will convey with full authenticity the stylistic concept represented by the key personality behind historically informed early music performance in 2024. m\u00e1rcius 15-i nemzeti \u00fcnnep\u00fcnk alkalm\u00e1b\u00f3l \u00e9rt\u00e9kteremt\u0151 tev\u00e9kenys\u00e9g\u00e9nek, valamint a m\u0171v\u00e9szeti k\u00f6z\u00e9letben v\u00e9gzett munk\u00e1j\u00e1nak elismer\u00e9s\u00e9\u00e9rt j\u00e1r\u00f3 legmagasabb magyar \u00e1llami kit\u00fcntet\u00e9sben, Kossuth-d\u00edjban r\u00e9szes\u00fclt.<\/p>{:}{:en}Gy\u00f6rgy Vashegyi<\/strong> earned a degree in conducting studies at the Budapest Academy of Music in 1993. His interest in historical performance was greatly influenced by Helmuth Rilling, John Eliot Gardiner, John Toll, Malcolm Bilson and Simon Standage.\r\n\r\nVashegyi has been a regular guest conductor for several Hungarian symphony orchestras and the Hungarian State Opera since the year 2000.\r\n\r\nHe founded the Purcell Choir and the Orfeo Zenekar in 1991 and has been responsible for countless important opera and oratorio productions, as well as cantata and orchestral programmes.\r\n\r\nHis name is associated with dozens of contemporary world and Hungarian premieres, while he has also released some 30 albums with his groups. Since 2014, he has developed a close relationship with the Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles, releasing the following French Baroque recordings through the Glossa music label: the world premier of Rameau\u2019s Les F\u00eates de Polymnie \u2013 Ballet h\u00e9roique<\/em>; the album Mondonville: Grands Motets<\/em>; a world premiere of Isb\u00e9<\/em>; the opera pastiche Un op\u00e9ra pour trois rois<\/em> and a theatrical performance of Rameau\u2019s Nais<\/em>.\r\n\r\nVashegyi has taught at the Academy of Music since 1992 and is currently an associate professor. He was awarded the Liszt Award in 2008 and the Knight\u2019s Cross of the Hungarian Order of Merit in 2015, and has been a member of the Hungarian Academy of Arts since 2013 and its president since October 2017.\r\n
