For the last concert in this subscription, we have assembled a bouquet of musical portraits of the saints.<\/p>\n

Although Saint John Chrysostom, Saint Francis of Assisi and Saint Francis Xavier all lived in different periods in different parts of the world, the activities they engaged in were similar in many respects. Their common feature was disdain for luxury and their embrace of the cause of helping the poor. Just like these saints, the composers represented at the concert also pursued their various careers in very different eras and regions. Nevertheless, their faith meant that their creativity shared a common language.<\/p>\n

It was in 1910 when the Russian Sergei Rachmaninov crafted his unaccompanied choral work The Liturgy of Saint John Chrysostom<\/em>, which fits into the liturgies of the Orthodox and Greek Catholic churches. “I had not written anything with such joy for a long time,”<\/em> he said.<\/p>\n

French composer Francis Poulenc wrote his work for male choir Four Little Prayers of Saint Francis of Assisi<\/em> in 1948. “All of my religious music turns its back on the style that is inspired in me by Paris and its outskirts.\u00a0 This is evidence of heredity<\/em>. Faith is strong in all the Poulencs,” <\/em>he wrote a few years earlier.<\/p>\n

The Czech-born composer Jan Dismas Zelenka (1679\u20131745), who mainly worked in Dresden, came from a completely different world and was in direct contact with his contemporaries Bach, Handel and Vivaldi. His 1727 composition Litaniae Xaverianae<\/em> is a large-scale Baroque work that holds its own when compared to other significant pieces from that era. Zelenka increases the work’s sense of drama with his bold harmonic innovations. This is the first time the work is being performed in Hungary.<\/p>\n

We will bring the legend of Saint Cecilia to life with a world premi\u00e8re. Tam\u00e1s Beischer-Maty\u00f3 composed his work for mixed choir Lilium et rosa<\/em> specifically for this concert based on a commission from Zolt\u00e1n Kocsis-Holper. As the composer put it, “This choral work illustrates the episode in the life of Saint Cecilia when the angel revealed himself to her husband and his brother on her wedding night. The work depicts the moment of wonder when the two brothers \u2013 who previously did not believe in any kind of supernatural world \u2013 are suddenly confronted with the hitherto hidden dimensions of a different form of existence.” <\/em><\/p>\n

The end of the concert invokes the Virgin Mary. It will do so with the Holy Mother\u2019s song of gratitude, Johann Sebastian Bach’s towering Magnificat<\/em>. The work dates from 1723, not long after the composer assumed his post as cantor at Leipzig’s Thomaskirche. It is an outstanding masterpiece of Baroque musical construction.<\/p>\n

She was born into a family of musicians on 27th<\/sup> of April 1988. She completed her secondary education in P\u00e1pa, and, in 2008, while a pupil of Veronika Dobi-Kiss, won first prize in the 6th Simandy Hungarian National Singing Competition. In that year she began her studies at the Franz Liszt Music University, Budapest, as a pupil of \u00c9va Marton, where she finished the Opera course in 2013 and the Teaching course in 2014.\u00a0 As a soloist she has made several appearances at the Budapest Palace of Arts, in the Great Hall of the Music Academy and in a great many of churches. Abroad she has sung in Brussel in the Hungarian Cultural Institut and in the Royal Library of Belgium, in Dresden Schloss Albrechtsberg. In 2014 she sang 3rd <\/sup>dame in Mozart\u2019s Magic Flute, in a contemporery opera (Out at S.E.A \u2013 in role of Medium) in Budapest, Milan, Paris that has been ordered by P\u00e9ter E\u00f6tv\u00f6s Foundation and \u00a03rd<\/sup> Maid in Elektra by Richard Strauss. She has also sung frequently in oratorio - including pieces of Buxtehude, Pergolesi, Bach, Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, Rossini, Bruckner and Arvo P\u00e4rt. She has worked on stage with Marco Armiliato, Patrick Fournillier, Maurizio Benini, and as a concert soloist with Carlo Montanaro, \u00c1d\u00e1m Fischer, Michael Schonwandt, Zolt\u00e1n Kocsis, Marco Comin.\u00a0 She has taken part in numerous master- classes including those with \u00c9va Marton, Nicholas Clapton and Andrea Mel\u00e1th, Francesco Torreggiani, Leonardo de Lisi, Alberto Gazale and Elena Lo Forte, Sylvia Sass.\r\n\r\nIn May 2011 she was awarded the Gundel Art Prize (opera singer category) and in 2012 the Junior Prima Prize. It boasts a rich repertoire chiefly consisting of orchestra-accompanied and a capella choral music, as well as oratorios, ranging from works by the early-Baroque Sch\u00fctz to Bach, Viennese Classical, 19th<\/sup> and 20th<\/sup>-century composers, and contemporary music. The Hungarian National Choir is open to every genre and is dedicated to performing rarely heard works. While the backbone of the repertoire consists of 19th<\/sup>-century oratorios, the Hungarian National Choir attaches great importance to performing contemporary music.
