Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach succeeded his godfather, Georg Philipp Telemann, in his post in Hamburg in 1768. Owing to the decades he spent in the court of Frederick the Great, he was considered one of the most honourable composers of his era. The work being performed at the concert is the first of the four symphonies he composed in 1775 and 1776: Friedrich Nicolai wrote in the Allgemeine deutsche Bibliothek<\/em> that these works “were the kind of gifts that only Bach could give us.”<\/em><\/p>\n

The “Military”<\/em> symphony is one of Haydn’s final dozen “London” symphonies. Following the introductory Adagio<\/em>, which is gloomy in some respects, come the themes of the quick main section. Although these are cheerful in tone, the dark shadows return again and again. The middle section of the Allegretto<\/em> is typical \u201cTurkish\u201d music. The Menuetto (Moderato)<\/em> was conceived in the spirit of Austrian folk dance. In the Presto<\/em> finale, Haydn again turns to “Turkish-style” sounds as a source of influence.<\/p>\n

Mozart married Constanze Weber in August 1782. The composer vowed to commemorate the event with a thanksgiving mass. He planned to premi\u00e8re the work in Salzburg. The only parts of the composition that were performed in the autumn of 1783 were the Kyrie,<\/em> Gloria <\/em>and the Sanctus<\/em>. Later on, further parts were completed, but not all of the liturgical text would be set to music. Even as a fragment, the amazing work clearly reveals the influence of the style of Bach and Handel as relayed through Baron Gottfried van Swieten. The Qui tollis<\/em>, the most dramatic movement in this mass conceived in the spirit of the “stile antico”, evokes the chromatically descending ostinato of the Baroque passacaglia, forming a perfect unity with the pained melody, likewise chromatic, of the chorus. \"We have long gone to holy mass together ever since our engagement, to confession and communion and I find that I have never prayed so intimately or confessed or taken communion with such devotion as w hen I am by her side. And she feels the same. So we are clearly created for each other and God, who oversees to everything, has decreed that he will not abandon us\" wrote Mozart on August 17th 1782 to his father, just two weeks after he had married Constanze. He agreed to compose a mass in gratitude to his marriage, which he planned to have performed in Salzburg when he visited Leopold Mozart together with his wife. Unlike his earlier masses, Mozart planned a grand \"cantata mass\", possibly for Constanze to perform. He first mentions the work in progress on January 4th 1783: \"I have the morale to write it! This is why the words are running from my pen. I have made a pledge in my heart and I hope I can keep it (...) that sincerity of my resolution is proved by the score of the mass which is half complete.\" Mozart began work in July 1782 and continued until May the following year and yet he never completed it. His visit to Salzburg only took place in summer and Mozart took the semi-complete score with him, but he failed to finish it there either. Thus only the Kyrie and Gloria movements were premiered in the Salzburg St Peter's Monastary church on October 26th 1783. The Mass in C minor was to remain unfinished: besides the Kyrie and Gloria, only a Sanctus and Benedictus was finished and of the Credo only two movements (\"Credo in unum Deum\" \"Et incarnatus\"). There was no Agnus Dei.\r\n\r\n\"We have to understand the characteristics of the style of the C minor mass in the wider context with Mozart's contemporary activities and compositions\" - warned Stanley Sadie in the New Grove Lexicon. \"In 1782, he became acquainted with Baron Gottfried van Swieten in whose house he regularly performed. As the ambassador of Berlin, van Swieten became a lover of late Baroque music which was virtually never heard in Vienna outside a very restricted circle of enthusiasts. These works interested Mozart who copied down several Bach fugues and it led to him composing a suite and countless fugues of his own. The C minor mass is the first large scale Mozart composition which bears the hallmarks of his acquaintance with the style of Bach and Handel. This partly explains Mozart's growing interest in counterpoint (this can be seen in instrumental works of this period, such as the string quartet in G major, K. 387) but also the archaic mood which appears in Mozart's compositional palette. This style is most conspicuous in the \"Qui tollis\" movement of the C minor mass: the dotted rhythms of the strings evoke the character of a dignified \"French overture,\" the bass line follows the chromatically descending ostinato characteristic of Baroque passacaglias, while the two choruses alternate, singing weighty and sorrowful chromatic solos. We can also discover the archaic in some of the solo movements: the vocal solos of the\"Domine Deus\" duet and the \"Quonium\" trio with their elevated contrapuntal technique, as well as their baroque figurations and virtually bare continuo textures all betray the influence of Bach and Handel. The expressive melodiousness of the other solo movements and their ornamentation follow the accepted Austrian church style (\"Laudamus\", \"Et incarnatus\"), as well as the superbly crafted \"Cum Sancto Spiritu\" that closes the Gloria, clearly a fugue based on the Fux type model. She studied at the St. Stephen High School and the Conservatory of Music between 1992 and 1996. Her teachers were \u2013 among others - Laszl\u00f3 Margit, Julia Hamari, and Catherine Schultz. Between 1997 and 2002 she regularly participated in Hamari Julia\u2019s courses in Budapest, Stuttgart, Florence, Bad Libenzelle, Steinnauban, Eltville, and in Vienna.In 1998 she became the Voice of the year in the singing competition organized by the Hungarian State Opera and the Deutsche Telekom. <\/span>In 2000 she won the second prize of the Hungarian Radio\u2019s competition and became a runner up in the Canadian International and the S 'Hertogenbosch (Netherlands) singing competitions. Katalin Halmai originally trained as a pianist. She obtained her singing and teacher's diploma at the Franz Liszt Music Academy. As a winner of numerous prizes at international singing competitions, she has taken an active role in the Hungarian and international music scene since 1990. She is a regular guest performer with the Bach Academy and has toured with the Munich Chamber Orchestra, the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra and the Berlin Philharmonic. She has worked with such conductors as Helmuth Rilling, Sir Roger Norrington, Leopold Hager and Herbert Blomstedt. Since 1995, she has been a soloist at the Vienna Staatsoper and the Volksoper where she has sung the finest lyric mezzo-soprano roles: Rosina, Cindarella, Cherubin, Zerlina, Annius and Siebel.<\/p>\r\n \r\n\r\nShe has also established a reputation for herself as a lieder and chamber music singer. He also sang the role of Lord Sidney in Rossini\u2019s Il Viaggio a Reims at the Pesaro International Rossini Festival. In 2009 he appeared at the Schwetzinger Festival in Handel\u2019s opera Ezio.\r\n\r\nSince 2009 he has been a member of the ensemble of the Landestheater Salzburg where he sang the roles of Bartolo and Figaro in Mozart`s Le nozze di Figaro, as well as Kaspar in Weber`s Der Freisch\u00fctz, Angelotti in Puccini`s Tosca, Dulcamara in Donizetti`s L`elisir d`amore and Leporello Mozart`s Don Giovanni.\r\n\r\nIn April 2011 he won the International Competition Rolando Nicolosi in Rome and received a Special Price at Marcello Giordani Competition in Catania, resulting in an invitation to make a major North-American debut.\r\n\r\nIn the same year he has made his debut as Pietro in Verdi`s Simon Boccanegra at the Budapest State Opera House. In May 2012 he sang with great success Monteverdi`s Il ritorno d`Ulisse in Patria in Oslo DNO with Alessandro de Marchi, Rossini`s Cenerentola (Alidoro) and Verdi`s Traviata (Dottore Grenvil) in Salzburg. In the Summer of 2012 he made his United States of America`s debut as Sprecher in Mozart`s Die Zauberfl\u0151te at the Crested Butte Music Festival in Colorado.\r\n\r\nRecently he sung Kaspar in Weber`s Der Freisch\u00fctz at the Giessen Stadttheater, Don Alfonso in Mozart`s Cosi fan tutte and Il re di Scozia in Haendel`s Ariodante at the Landestheater in Salzburg. At the Budapest Opera House he sung Colline in Puccini`s La Boh\u00e9me as well as Masetto in Mozart`s Don Giovanni. He gave his Debut at the Innsbruck Festival f\u00fcr Alte Musik as Publio in La Clemenza di Tito in August 2013. , followed Escamillo in Carmen in Budapest.\r\n\r\nIn 2014 he returned to Oslo to sing Colline in a Revival of the famous Stefan Herheim Production of La Boh\u00e9me, and he sung Leporello in a New Production of Don Giovanni there as well. He made his french Debut as Priester in Magic Flute at Theatre Vichy \u00a0followed Ferrando in Trovatore in Budapest State Opera.\r\n\r\nFrom the Season \u00a02015\/16 he is a member of the Ensemble in N\u00fcrnberg State Theater, where he sung a.o. Leporello in Don Giovanni, Huascar in Les Indes Galantes, Mustafa in L'italiana in Algeri.
