First come the three songs that he revised from five Slovak folk songs he had previously written for solo voice into pieces for chamber orchestra and female choir: <em>Wedding<\/em> (Svatba), <em>Lullaby<\/em> (Ukolievarka) and the <em>Lad&#8217;s Dance<\/em> (Tanec mladencov).<\/p>\n<p>The concert will end with <em>Cantata profana<\/em>, which also features the folklore of the Carpathian Basin and is full of the atmosphere of ballads about youths finding their way on the path to adulthood. It is no coincidence that it was during the period when he was writing this work that Bart\u00f3k formulated his artistic credo in a letter: <em>&#8220;My true guiding principle<\/em>[\u2026]<em> is that of the ideal brotherhood of all peoples. Brotherhood in spite of all the wars and all the strife.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Bart\u00f3k&#8217;s two works are wonderfully suited to being played alongside the two contemporary works being performed at this concert, both of them movements from masses.<\/p>\n<p>Zolt\u00e1n Kov\u00e1cs&#8217;s <em>Credo<\/em>, created in 2019 as an expansion to <em>Missa Pannonica<\/em>, which was premi\u00e8red by the Hungarian National Philharmonic last year. The composer described this piece, which can also be performed independently, as <em>&#8220;having a structure that faithfully follows the segmentation of the traditional text of the Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed. Standing out from the three grand tableaus is the soloists&#8217; middle section, in which events such as the dramatic moments of Christ&#8217;s death on the cross come to life. The music&#8217;s eclectic mood is build predominantly on European traditions. There are also more distant influences: for example, the dynamic and improvisation rhetoric of African-American spirituals add additional colour to the style of expression.&#8221; <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Zsolt Hamar describes his composition to be performed after the intermission as follows: <em>&#8220;My work for choir and orchestra called<\/em> Offert\u00f3rium <em>is, <\/em><em>in terms of genre, a cantata.<\/em><em> In 2007, after it had been originally premiered in its initial version as an a cappella choral work, I wrote an orchestral accompaniment for it which was also performed by the Hungarian National Philharmonic. The current version has been thoroughly reconceived and, in many spots, revised, and I have dedicated it to the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra and the Hungarian National Choir. Az els\u0151 r\u00e9sz eleje sok zenet\u00f6rt\u00e9n\u00e9szt a <em>M\u00e1t\u00e9-passi\u00f3<\/em> nyit\u00f3k\u00f3rus\u00e1ra eml\u00e9keztetett. A <em>Cantata<\/em> k\u00f6z\u00e9ps\u0151, <em>Andante<\/em> szakasza a fiait keres\u0151, megtal\u00e1l\u00f3 ap\u00e1t \u00e1ll\u00edtja el\u00e9nk. Az apa \u00e9s a legkisebb fi\u00fa p\u00e1rbesz\u00e9de ut\u00e1n a harmadik nagy formar\u00e9sz egyfajta \u00f6sszefoglal\u00e1s. Aligha v\u00e9letlen, hogy ez \u00e9ppen szimmetrikus ellent\u00e9te, megford\u00edt\u00e1sa a m\u0171vet kezd\u0151, gomolyg\u00f3 sk\u00e1lameneteknek.{:}{:en}<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Bart\u00f3k wrote this secular cantata as part of a cycle in 1930. We do not know whether the projected cycle would have comprised of three or four parts, since the available evidence is contradictory. Where there is no doubt is that all the works would have drawn from the peasant music of peoples living alongside the river Danube, and that the cycle would proclaim one of Bart\u00f3k's most often expressed fundamental ideas: the inter-dependence of the Central East European countries.<\/p>\r\nThe Cantata Profana is the Romanian instalment, although the composer certainly attempted to disguise this. He had good reason: chauvinistic elements in Romanian musical life began to regard his entire ouevre as being a part of Romanian culture. Bart\u00f3k protested against being named \"compositorul roman\" (Romanian composer), detailing his reasons in a letter to Octavian Beu - after deciding not to allow the Cantata to be heard in its original language (Romanian). He also had to defend himself from Hungarian nationalism, which he achieved by initially banning its performance in Hungary. For this reason, the Cantata was premiered in London in 1935, and was only heard in his native Hungary the following year (with soloists Endre R\u00f6sler and Imre Pall\u00f3) with the text in Hungarian.\r\n\r\nBart\u00f3k himself collected the kolindas, the verses that gave him inspiration, before the First World War in the villages of Idicel and Urusiu de Sus. There are still people today in these villages who have fragmented memories of these Christmas songs with their pagan texts. Bart\u00f3k himself compiled the Cantata's libretto from both versions of the songs, and it was he who translated them to Hungarian. The verse legend of the young men turned into stags was something that deeply touched Bart\u00f3k - he even went to the trouble of explaining his feelings in a surviving radio broadcast.\r\n\r\nThere are few Bart\u00f3k works which have attracted such a diversity of analysis and interpretation. The myth naturally gives much room for the imagination of scholars. For example the lads' magical transformation and the dramatic dialogue between father and his oldest son can be seen as the age-old rebellion of youth. The work is an identification with nature, an artistic ars poetica and much else besides. The final sentence (\"our mouths do not drink from a glass but from fresh, cool springs\") is itself a symbol for everything that Bart\u00f3k was aiming for artistically.\r\n\r\nThere are no specific Romanian motifs among the musical material. Many historians have sought to draw comparison with the opening chorus of the St Matthew Passion in the first section. After the introduction, the metre changes and drums and horns indicate the beginning of the hunting fugue. The hunting scene unexpectedly breaks off when the boys, chasing the stag, come to a bridge, upon which they are magically transformed to stags themselves. (Interestingly, the image of the bridge derives from Bart\u00f3k's misunderstanding (perhaps deliberate, perhaps not) of the Romanian original). The central Andante section of the Cantata presents the figure of the father, who is searching for and then finds his sons. After the dialogue between him and his youngest son, the final formal section acts as a kind of summary. Before the work concludes, we again hear the tenor soloist. His melody utilises the notes of the so called acoustic row, in a scale which follows the natural semitones. The era marked by the name of J\u00e1nos Ferencsik and Kobayashi Ken-Ichiro was followed by a new chapter in the history of the orchestra when in 1997 Zolt\u00e1n Kocsis became general music director until his death. In almost two decades the National Philharmonic Orchestra underwent renewal. After the death of Zolt\u00e1n Kocsis, the Ferenc Liszt Award-winning Zsolt Hamar held the post of Musical Director at the Hungarian National Philharmonic from March 2017 to August 2020. He previously worked with the orchestra as its first permanent conductor and built up an impressive international career.\r\n\r\nThe Orchestra is one of the top interpreters of the work of B\u00e9la Bart\u00f3k, and the albums of the <em>Bart\u00f3k New Series<\/em> have won numerous accolades in Hungary and abroad. The orchestra perform not only classics but also numerous other important works previously missing from the repertoire, many of which require a large orchestral apparatus. It attaches great importance to introducing contemporary Hungarian works to the audiences. It has given many popular chamber music concerts and hosted events for young people.\r\n\r\nThe orchestra\u2019s concerts have featured world-famous soloists and conductors. It supports young musicians recently embarked on an international career. In recent decades, the National Philharmonic Orchestra has appeared in the greatest venues and festivals around the world, including the Avery Fisher Hall in New York, the Suntory Hall in Tokyo, the Birmingham Symphony Hall, the Megaron in Athens, Bozar Centre in Brussels, the Enescu Festival in Bucharest, the Beethoven Festival in Bogot\u00e1, as well as the Colmar and Canary Island Festivals.
