The title of this concert \u2013 “White Nights” \u2013 refers to the lands of the north, where the sun never sets during part of the year, and for 24 hours of each day, there is no darkness. What does the “North” mean in our collective consciousness? If we associate the south with a sort of temperamentality, the east with the exoticism of Asian countries, and the west with the development of technology and civilisation, then the north, we would have to say, is a place full of relentless cold and harshness. But when it comes to northern music, which is often also very passionate and energetic, isn’t the truth really the exact opposite of all this?<\/p>\n

And speaking of cardinal directions, Krist\u00f3f Bar\u00e1ti, the soloist for the concert, might also make the audience of this northern concert think of the exciting lands of the south, as he lived in Venezuela between the ages of two and twelve, the period when his musical consciousness was developing. Today the Kossuth Prize-winning violinist is celebrated all over the world, and his repertoire includes every important work written for the instrument. Although the 66-year-old Michael Sch\u00f8nwandt is the pride of the Danish music world, this conductor who is equally at home with the operatic and symphonic repertoires spent his student years at London’s Royal Academy of Music. As one of his specialities is the oeuvre of his countryman Carl Nielsen, it is no coincidence that the second part of the concert will feature the Danish composer’s third symphony<\/em>, dating from 1910\/11, which is notable for its wordless soprano and baritone solo parts in its second movement. It was Ibsen himself who commissioned his fellow Norwegian Edvard Grieg to write the incidental music for his drama Peer Gynt<\/em>, a task which the composer took on reluctantly. Nevertheless, the piece written in 1875 eventually became his most popular work. Jean Sibelius (1865\u20131957) Heged\u0171versenye a zeneirodalom egyik legn\u00e9pszer\u0171bb versenym\u0171ve: gyakran hallhat\u00f3 \u00e9l\u0151 el\u0151ad\u00e1sban, \u00e9s a XX. sz\u00e1zad v\u00e9g\u00e9ig t\u00f6bb mint 50 lemezfelv\u00e9tel k\u00e9sz\u00fclt bel\u0151le. M\u00e1r 1899-ben tervbe vette, hogy \u00edr egy heged\u0171versenyt, s 1902-re fel is v\u00e1zolta a m\u0171 n\u00e9h\u00e1ny r\u00e9szlet\u00e9t. A kompon\u00e1l\u00e1s nagy r\u00e9sze 1903 \u0151sz\u00e9n zajlott. Feles\u00e9ge visszaeml\u00e9kez\u00e9se szerint a zeneszerz\u0151 l\u00e1zasan dolgozott, a heged\u0171 \u00e9jjel-nappal a kez\u00e9ben volt, \u00e9s szebbn\u00e9l szebb zenei gondolatok jutottak esz\u00e9be. Mintha a hangszer ir\u00e1nti minden szeretet\u00e9t, minden virtu\u00f3z \u00e1lm\u00e1t ebbe a m\u0171be \u2013 egyetlen versenym\u0171v\u00e9be \u2013 kompon\u00e1lta volna bele. A Heged\u0171versenyt eredetileg Willy Burmesternek, a h\u00edrneves n\u00e9met virtu\u00f3znak akarta dedik\u00e1lni, s \u0151t k\u00e9rte fel a bemutat\u00e1s\u00e1ra is, \u00e1m Burmester a kit\u0171z\u00f6tt id\u0151pontban nem \u00e9rt r\u00e1, ez\u00e9rt a darabot az 1904. febru\u00e1ri bemutat\u00f3n m\u00e1s j\u00e1tszotta. Az \u00e1tdolgozott verzi\u00f3 bemutat\u00e1s\u00e1t megint csak nem siker\u00fclt Burmesterrel egyeztetni, \u00edgy az a Berlini Filharmonikusok koncertmester\u00e9nek, Karel Hal\u00edrnak a sz\u00f3l\u00f3j\u00e1val, Richard Strauss vez\u00e9nylet\u00e9vel hangzott fel el\u0151sz\u00f6r Berlinben, 1905 okt\u00f3ber\u00e9ben. <\/p>{:}{:en}The Violin Concerto by Jean Sibelius (1865\u20131957) is one of the most popular works in music history. Violinists are particularly fond of it because in spite of the technical challenge it poses, every passage and virtuoso element is rewarding and \u2018kind on the hand\u2019 of the player, revealing their profound relationship with their instrument. That is no accident, since Sibelius himself had wanted to become a violinist and even in the 1880s he chiefly considered himself a violinist. It is as if he composed all of his love for the instrument and all of his virtuoso dreams into his only concerto. Although throughout the work the focus is almost entirely on the soloist, the shaping and development of the movements is symphonic in character and long solo passages occasionally alternate with important tutti \u2018eruptions\u2019. The sonority of the work is at the same time characterised by a special intimacy and chamber music. The orchestral instruments, in particular the woodwinds, often play in pair or small groups and assume an important role in creating musical gestures and colours, as well in directing the musical process. In the opening movement the soloist\u2019s great cadenza, in irregular fashion, assumes the function of the middle development section of the sonata form. The B-flat-major Adagio\u2019s sentimentality-free lyricism has been compared by one critic to the \u2018Romance\u2019 movements of Mozart\u2019s violin concertos. The triple-time D-major finale is a rustic dance scene. Her repertoire includes songs, oratorios and opera arias.\r\n\r\nShe began singing as a 13-year-old in Gy\u0151r, a city where she also completed her later studies.\r\nIn 2007, she graduated from the vocal soloist department of the Varga Tibor Institute of Musical Art.
