Many people would answer this question with a confident &#8220;a lot&#8221;, citing Dvo\u0159\u00e1k&#8217;s <em>Cello Competition<\/em> and <em>New World Symphony<\/em> \u2013 along with the <em>Vltava<\/em> piece from Smetena&#8217;s cycle of symphonic poems <em>M\u00e1 vlast<\/em>. The fact is, however, that many pieces of Czech music are rarely or never heard in concerts in Hungary. This exciting concert offers some remedies for this situation, offering more of Smetana&#8217;s cycle besides Vltava, as well as Jan\u00e1\u010dek&#8217;s rarely heard <em>Glagolitic<\/em> <em>(Old Slavic) mass<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The nationalist movements that evolved among smaller ethnic groups in Europe in the 19th century resulted in patriotic-spirited works in most of the branches of the arts, including literature, the fine arts and music. One such effort was Bed\u0159ich Smetana&#8217;s cycle of symphonic poems, <em>M\u00e1 vlast<\/em>. Between 1874 and 1879, the composer wrote six independent orchestral works, of which <em>Vltava<\/em>, named after the river that flows through Prague and much of the rest of the country, became the most famous. Born in Moravia, Leo\u0161 Jan\u00e1\u010dek was an enthusiastic supporter of the Pan-Slavic movement, and these sympathies were in part what prompted him to write his <em>Glagolitic Mass<\/em> in Old Church Slavonic. His work&#8217;s most characteristic feature is the mixture of both archaic and modern elements. With the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra, Hungarian National Choir and Hungarian and Czech soloist playing the two compositions under the baton of Oliver von Dohn\u00e1nyi, there will be a conductor who is well versed in the Czech repertoire on the podium. Born in 1955 and currently music director of Yekaterinburg&#8217;s Ural Opera and Ballet Theatre, von Dohn\u00e1nyi is descended from a sibling of an 18th-century ancestor of Ernst von Dohn\u00e1nyi. when the composer was visiting his home village of Hukvaldy in Moravia, he complained to the Olm\u00fctz Cardinal about the music he heard in his local church which he felt was very weak and anaemic. The Cardinal immediately asked Jan\u00e1\u010dek to compose something worthy of the liturgy to rectify matters. Jan\u00e1\u010dek had previously evinced little interest in liturgical music, other than some studies dating from the 1870s and an incomplete organ mass from 1907. In 1921 he began dealing with Slavic liturgical texts but only sat down to compose the work in August 1926. In the year of his death, he said of the work: \u201cAncient Slavonic Mass?
