How else could the Hungarian National Philharmonic, dedicated as it is to the culture of classical music, celebrate the beginning of the carnival season than with pieces that are light, entertaining and relaxing \u2013 without sacrificing one bit of good taste or the need for perfectionism in one’s workmanship. The programme, which will be conducted by music director D\u00e1niel Diny\u00e9s, predominantly offers works by artists who were somehow connected to the world of the classics.<\/p>\n

The carnival season is a period with a great tradition that, in spite of the carefree fun that is part and parcel of it, is inseparable from Christianity, as it lasts from the Epiphany until Shrove Tuesday. Why did people long ago hold carnivals? To make sure they could enjoy plenty of good times before the start of Lent. The word “carnival” itself is not coincidentally a reminder of the approaching period of fasting, as it stems from the Latin carne<\/em> and vale<\/em>, meaning “meat” and “farewell” \u2013 particularly in reference to its last three days. As the HNP has never held a concert to open the carnival season before, this year’s event offers the audience a novelty. Our composers are not just anybody: The greatest admirer of Johann Strauss was Brahms, Offenbach’s was Debussy, and Dvo\u0159\u00e1k encouraged Franz Leh\u00e1r to start composing instead of playing violin. One of the sensations promised by this programme is Leh\u00e1r’s rarely heard Concertino<\/em>, as performed by the versatile virtuoso Vilmos Szabadi. Performing the vocal operetta passages will be such stars of the opera world as Polina Pasztircs\u00e1k and Atala Sch\u00f6ck. Teresa, the child of the Cardinal's treasurer, loves Cellini the goldsmith, but her father intends her to marry the sculptor Fieramocsa. Cellini sneaks into Teresa's room in the night. Their love duet begins in the sweet melodic style of Italian songs, but the man's avowal gradually takes the scene into increasingly passionate territory. They plan that Teresa will be spirited away during carnival time (and this being an opera, Fieramosca is naturally on hand to eavesdrop.)\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nThe description of the carnival is a large scale dramatic tableau and one of Berlioz's greatest theatrical scenes. The colourful commotion, the elemental music, the precisely evoked mood, sound and colours of southern folk festival is irresistible. The Hungarian musicologist Gy\u00f6rgy Kro\u00f3 characterised its historic importance, calling it the progenitor of the closing\u00a0 crowd scene of Act 2 of Wagners's Meistersingers, and the Krom tableau from Mussorgsky's Boris Gondunov. Berlioz constructs the sweeping Allegro of the overture from three themes sung by the thronging\u00a0 masked crowd (the chorus): \"Venez, venez peuple de Rome\" (Come, come, people of Rome), \"Mais d\u00e9j\u0155 la foule, Dans l'ombre et la nuit\" (\"But the crowd is in the shadow and the night\") and \"Ah sonnez trompettes\" (\"Let the trumpets sound.\"){:}","post_title":"{:hu}R\u00f3mai She studied with Zsuzsa Forrai at the Teacher Training Faculty of the Budapest Academy of Music before becoming a student of Judit N\u00e9meth. She also attended various master classes with Julia Hamari, Anna Reynolds, Adrienne Csengery, Walther Berry and Walter Moore. In 1998 she won the Sim\u00e1ndy J\u00f3zsef Singing Competition, 2000 she got III. Prize in the Singing Competition of the Hungarian Broadcasting. For a few years she was member of the Szeged National Theatre, Hungary, than she was appeared at the Budapest State Opera and St\u00e4dtische B\u00fchnen Frankfurt, the Semperoper Dresden as well as the Brussels Theatre de la Monnaie, Theater an der Wien and the Prague Narodni Divadlo.\u00a0 She made her debut in 2010 at the Opera National de Paris She can also regularly be seen on the concert platform, for example in Concertgebouw Amsterdam and Musikverein Wien.
