The first work in the concert, Divertimento<\/em>, was written by Ferenc Farkas (1905\u20132000) during a study trip to Rome, when he was 25 years old. It won the young composer the Franz Liszt Award in 1933. The composition’s five movements are dense and serenely light in tone. Sometimes classicising (the third movement, for example, bears the inscription Tempo di Minuetto<\/em>), they can also be mildly Hungarian in style, and their system of gestures is graceful, their sound transparent, and their shaping clear.\u00a0 Following the neoclassicism of the early 20th century, the work meets all the traditional requirements of the divertimento genre: the music is colourful, entertaining and elegant. The Budapest premi\u00e8re of the piece was conducted by Ernst von Dohn\u00e1nyi.<\/p>\n

S\u00e1ndor Balassa’s Double Concerto<\/em> was born thanks to two commissions: he needed to create both a horn concerto and an oboe concerto. The composer executed the dual task in a single piece. One of the interesting aspects of the work is the fact that the dramatic sounds from the development phase of the first movement of Mozart’s Great G minor Symphony<\/em> are evoked in the second movement. Soloists oboist L\u00e1szl\u00f3 Hadady and horn player Szabolcs Zempl\u00e9ni are regular guests at the world’s centres of music.<\/p>\n

Ernst von Dohn\u00e1nyi’s Suite in F-sharp minor<\/em> for full orchestra dates from 1909. The six variations in the first movement, like the work Variations on a Nursery Tune<\/em> is diverse in terms of both atmosphere and instrumentation, and is full of sparkling ideas. At the end of the second movement, which can be likened to one of Bruckner’s scherzos, there can be heard a horn theme that is evocative of the music of Mahler. What made the melody of the romance so magical is the lightness of the scoring. The era marked by the name of J\u00e1nos Ferencsik and Kobayashi Ken-Ichiro was followed by a new chapter in the history of the orchestra when in 1997 Zolt\u00e1n Kocsis became general music director until his death. In almost two decades the National Philharmonic Orchestra underwent renewal. After the death of Zolt\u00e1n Kocsis, the Ferenc Liszt Award-winning Zsolt Hamar held the post of Musical Director at the Hungarian National Philharmonic from March 2017 to August 2020. He previously worked with the orchestra as its first permanent conductor and built up an impressive international career.\r\n\r\nThe Orchestra is one of the top interpreters of the work of B\u00e9la Bart\u00f3k, and the albums of the Bart\u00f3k New Series<\/em> have won numerous accolades in Hungary and abroad. The orchestra perform not only classics but also numerous other important works previously missing from the repertoire, many of which require a large orchestral apparatus. It attaches great importance to introducing contemporary Hungarian works to the audiences. It supports young musicians recently embarked on an international career. In recent decades, the National Philharmonic Orchestra has appeared in the greatest venues and festivals around the world, including the Avery Fisher Hall in New York, the Suntory Hall in Tokyo, the Birmingham Symphony Hall, the Megaron in Athens, Bozar Centre in Brussels, the Enescu Festival in Bucharest, the Beethoven Festival in Bogot\u00e1, as well as the Colmar and Canary Island Festivals.
