We will pay tribute to the 250th birthday of the Viennese maestro as part of Martonv\u00e1s\u00e1r&#8217;s Beethoven Anniversary Year programmes. On this celebratory occasion, the audience will enjoy the composer&#8217;s remarkable works across five nights, instead of the usual three.<\/p>\n<p>And with the help of some prestigious Hungarian solo performers, all nine of Beethoven&#8217;s symphonies will be performed in Brunswick Castle&#8217;s beautiful park. The conductor for the concerts will be Zsolt Hamar, the musical director of the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Although today it is perhaps heard less frequently than any of its fellows, the Symphony No. 8 from 1812 was Beethoven\u2019s own favourite among the nine that he wrote. The work is surprising in many respects: it is as if Beethoven followed up on his three preceding symphonies by returning to the framework that Haydn had developed for the genre with a four-movement, but still shorter.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Rondo for Piano and Orchestra in B major was originally intended as the closing movement of the Piano Concerto No. 2. However, it was only completed after Beethoven\u2019s death, by the composer\u2019s student Carl Czerny. \u00c1d\u00e1m Szokolay, the soloist performing the piece, is only a few months older than Beethoven was at the time of composing this piece.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Composed between 1802 and 1808, the \u201cPastoral\u201d sixth symphony stands out from Beethoven\u2019s other works in the genre. It is the only one to comprise five movements, and he also gave each moment a title suggesting a programme to the music. The first two moments depict encounters between humans and nature, while the scherzo conveys the merry coexistence of village people, followed by two movements illustrating a storm and the feelings of gratitude that it leaves in its He launched his career by taking second place and the audience prize at the Hungarian Television International Conducting Competition. He has also won prizes at several other international competitions (taking second place at the Cadaqu\u00e9s Orchestra International Conducting Competition in Spain and first place at both the Portuguese Radio Conducting Competition and the Antonio Pedrotti International Conducting Competition in Trento, Italy). In 1997, he was invited by Zolt\u00e1n Kocsis to serve as first permanent conductor of the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra. After working as Lorin Maazel\u2019s assistant at the Salzburg Festival in 1998, he spent the years from 2000 to 2009 as the music director of the Pannon Philharmonic while simultaneously serving as first guest conductor of the Orchestra di Padova e del Veneto.\r\n\r\nA regular guest with orchestras and at concert halls around Europe, Japan and the USA, he has also appeared with nearly every symphonic ensemble in Hungary. Hamar has regularly conducted at the Hungarian State Opera since 2001 and is a welcome guest at opera houses in other countries as well. Between 2005 and 2011, he worked as a permanent conductor at the world-famous Opernhaus Z\u00fcrich. He has recorded works by Liszt together with the Hungarian National Philharmonic and Mahler\u2019s <em>First Symphony<\/em> with the Pannon Philharmonic. It was completed by October 1812 and premiered in 1814 together with the Seventh Symphony. The popularity of the latter work overshadowed the new one and Beethoven angrily noted the Eighth symphony did not please the audience because it was so much better than the other work. \"Some day they will like it,\" he growled. Robert Schumann sensed the exceptional value of the \"small symphony.\" In 1840, following a Leipzig concert, he express it thus: \"Of Beethoven's symphonies, the F major is the least played, even in Leipzig, where all Beethoven's symphonies are hugely popular, there are prejudices against it, but for the profundity of its humour, it has no competition from any of his other symphonies. Towards the end of the finale we find a tremendous climax which has few parallels in Beethoven's oeuvre and hearing the B flat major Allegretto, one can do nothing except listen and submerge oneself in happiness. The orchestra was truly splendid: even the delicate trio with its melancholic horn melody succeeded perfectly.\"<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the scherzo like Allegretto mentioned by Schumann (the symphony has no true slow movement) Beethoven employs the same melody which he used in the jokey canon he wrote for M\u00e4lzel the creator of the metronome. The archaic tone of the third movement is also notable. In the trio, we hear the relic of a much earlier composition, the melody of a minuet Beethoven wrote for two flutes in 1792.
