The concert proved to be a bit tiring, as it lasted four hours. In addition to two new symphonies (the <em>Symphony No. 5 in C minor<\/em> and the <em>Symphony No. 6 in F major<\/em>), the event also featured the <em>Piano Concerto No. 4 in G major<\/em>, a concert aria, two movements from a mass, and the composer also improvised for the audience. He even decided, at the last minute, to write a soaring choral piece to conclude the programme. This became the <em>Choral Fantasy.<\/em> The auditorium was not heated, and they say Beethoven was amused that most of the audience stuck it out to the end. This time around, the audience will not have to shiver as they enjoy two pieces from that famous concert: the <em>Choral Fantasy<\/em> and the <em>Sixth Symphony.<\/em> What is interesting about the former is the lengthy piano introduction (which Beethoven originally improvised at the concert), as well as the melody that sounds quite close to the later <em>Ode to Joy<\/em>. Beethoven also wrote titles for the individual movements of the <em>Pastoral Symphony<\/em>, as his sixth effort in the genre is known. The first one is about the beauty of village life, while the second is a scene by a brook. Then a village celebration starts, only to be interrupted by a unique celebration of nature: a raging storm. The final\u00e9 is a hymn of gratitude to nature. In the last moment the composer decided to round off the concert with another \u2018brilliant work\u2019 that would feature a choir (since there was one on stage already). A spur-of-the-moment work with a completely unique structure, the Choral Fantasy included the piano improvisation (which at the world premi?re the composer did in fact improvise and only noted down the final version when it was published in 1810). This is followed by the first half of the main part termed \u2018Finale\u2019 which also features the orchestra. After a recitative-like introduction the music shifts from C minor to C major and the piano intones a slightly modified version of Beethoven\u2019s lied Gegenliebe (Love returned, 1794\/95), which is followed by numerous variations. In the second half of the \u2018Finale\u2019 first the soloists \u2013 two sopranos and a contralto, then two tenors and a bass \u2013 sing the theme of the lied, and eventually the choir joins in. The work is rounded off by a passionate, truly \u2018brilliant\u2019 coda. Due to the constraint of time the poem Beethoven latterly added to the music is a kind of \u2018Ode to Art\u2019 and consequently its choice of theme makes it comparable with the Ode to Joy set to music in his Ninth.
