Everything was being nationalised. In the mighty Soviet Union, Comrade Andrei Zhdanov had read out the names of the sinners at a plenary session of the Supreme Soviet: Shostakovich and Prokofiev&#8230; had succumbed to bourgeois tastes. In the West, impatient young composers considered everyone who had gone before to be obsolete. Only Anton Webern, who had died three years previously, merited a good word. Across the Atlantic, John Cage was composing works for prepared piano.<\/p>\n<p>The year is 1948. But an elderly Bavarian gentleman seems not to have noticed any of this. Unwavering, he believes that music should sound beautiful. Richard Strauss had outlived Webern, Bart\u00f3k and Alban Berg. Living well into old age. When a female reporter asked him what his plans were, he answered, &#8220;Well, to die.&#8221; But death was still a few months away. He was engaged with writing lieder. He wrote three of them to the poems of his contemporary Hermann Hesse, the fourth to the 19th-century poet Joseph Freiherr von Eichendorff. They address themes of passing on, in an irretrievably reactionary musical language. &#8220;Post-Romanticism!&#8221; scoffed the youngsters. Or was the ageing composer looking further ahead? One musicologist has used a superb expression to describe the style that Strauss pursued, for the most part, after <em>Der Rosenkavalier<\/em>: &#8220;premature postmodernism&#8221;. That&#8217;s right! One no longer needs to blush for liking it&#8230; And we can all be delighted that it will be Andrea Rost singing <em>Vier letzte Lieder<\/em>, as the pieces were termed after the composer&#8217;s death in 1949. With some music from Wagner beforehand, and by Schumann afterwards. The overture to <em>Meistersinger<\/em> and then the <em>Rhenish Symphony. <\/em>Could one ask for anything better? He launched his career by taking second place and the audience prize at the Hungarian Television International Conducting Competition. He has also won prizes at several other international competitions (taking second place at the Cadaqu\u00e9s Orchestra International Conducting Competition in Spain and first place at both the Portuguese Radio Conducting Competition and the Antonio Pedrotti International Conducting Competition in Trento, Italy). In 1997, he was invited by Zolt\u00e1n Kocsis to serve as first permanent conductor of the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra. After working as Lorin Maazel\u2019s assistant at the Salzburg Festival in 1998, he spent the years from 2000 to 2009 as the music director of the Pannon Philharmonic while simultaneously serving as first guest conductor of the Orchestra di Padova e del Veneto.\r\n\r\nA regular guest with orchestras and at concert halls around Europe, Japan and the USA, he has also appeared with nearly every symphonic ensemble in Hungary. Hamar has regularly conducted at the Hungarian State Opera since 2001 and is a welcome guest at opera houses in other countries as well. Between 2005 and 2011, he worked as a permanent conductor at the world-famous Opernhaus Z\u00fcrich. He has recorded works by Liszt together with the Hungarian National Philharmonic and Mahler\u2019s <em>First Symphony<\/em> with the Pannon Philharmonic. Nem tudjuk, nem tudhatjuk m\u00e1r, honnan sz\u00f3l hozz\u00e1nk a k\u00f6lt\u0151. Az innens\u0151 oldalr\u00f3l, vagy oda\u00e1tr\u00f3l, a t\u00falvil\u00e1gb\u00f3l?\r\n\r\nA szerz\u0151 sohasem sz\u00e1nta ciklusnak e n\u00e9gy dalt, Wilhelm Furtw\u00e4ngler foglalta egybe \u0151ket. His Third \u2018Rhenish\u2019 symphony is in fact his last in the genre. Having undergone a severe emotional and creative crisis in the previous years, Schumann composed the symphony in a positive period at the age of 40, shortly after accepting a post as city musical director in D\u00fcsseldorf in September. The work does not follow the classical symphonic model in that it consists of five, not four, movements; Schumann inserted a movement between the third slow movement and the finale, which is believed to have been inspired by Cologne Cathedral.
