It is summertime, and the heat is blistering, but it is cool in the shade. Our hero is resting under the foliage, dreaming about graceful nymphs and spending an afternoon happily doing nothing. In our bustling and jittery world, we can only envy Mallarm\u00e9’s protagonist, the goat-legged faun. Debussy wrote this ten-minute orchestral pr\u00e9lude to the French master’s poem, employing unmatched colours and sensual harmonies. Hearing it in wintertime brings solace. A caustic critic thought to describe the next piece in the programme, the Piano Concerto No. 2<\/em> by Camille Saint-Sa\u00ebns, as “starting out as Bach and ending as Offenbach.”<\/em> To which one hastens to add that the work’s middle section (the second movement), is a carnival of the animals. Even if the motifs and themes do not evoke the composer’s most popular work \u2013 whose movements include an elephant, a kangaroo and so many hoofed beasts, not to forget that true zoological phenomenon: the pianist \u2013 its atmosphere indisputably does.<\/p>\n

The French works will be followed by an English one. Passepartout followed by Phileas Fogg, so to speak. Sir Edward Elgar modelled himself on the English gentleman of the old school. He was polite, measured and slightly chilly. His Symphony No. 2<\/em>, however, reveals a character similar to Jules Verne’s protagonist. St\u00e9phane Mallarm\u00e9 (1842-1898) was one of the greatest innovators in the history of French poetry. His works, which abound in complex symbols and images, sought to represent states of mind rather than ideas, express moods rather than tell stories. Mallarm\u00e9 tried to capture that elusive line between dream and awakening that most of us who are not poets are well aware of but are unable to put into words.<\/p>\r\n

Mallarm\u00e9's eclogue L'Apr\u00e9s-midi d'un Faune (\"The Afternoon of a Faun\") was published in 1876. Debussy first set a poem by Mallarm\u00e9 to music in 1884, at the age of 22. Three years later, the young composer joined the circle of poets and artists who met at Mallarm\u00e9's house every Tuesday night for discussions and companionship. Thus he was thoroughly familiar with the poet's style before he began work on his prelude to %u201CThe Afternoon of a Faun\" in 1892.<\/p>\r\n

The first-person narrator in the eclogue (the word evokes associations with the pastoral poetry of the great Latin poet Virgil) is a faun, a mythological creature who is half man and half goat. The faun lives in the woods, near a river surrounded by reedy marshes; he is daydreaming about nymphs who may be real or mere figments of his imagination. The faun's desire is filtered through the vagueness of its object as he recalls past dreams, which emerge from the shadows only to recede into the darkness again.<\/p>\r\n

The faun plays a flute, which evokes the syrinx (the Greek panpipe)*; and it is quite natural that in Debussy's music the orchestral flute is given a solo part throughout. The languid opening melody, which descends, mostly in half-steps, from C-sharp to G natural and rises back to C-sharp again (thus outlining the exotic interval of the tritone, or augmented fourth), has become famous as an\u00a0 example of a melodic style independent from any traditional models. As it unfolds, the orchestral accompaniment becomes more and more intense. After a short resting point, a new section starts in which the first clarinet and the first oboe temporarily take over the lead from the flute; the tempo becomes more and more animated and finally a new melody is introduced, in sharp contrast with the chromatic flute theme that opened the piece. The new melody moves in wide intervals, and is played by all the woodwinds, plus the first horn, in unison. Finally, the first theme returns in its original tempo; following a passage that briefly brings back some of the agitation of the middle section, the music settles into a serene and peaceful idyll which prevails to the end.<\/p>\r\n

In his music, Debussy admirably captured that delicious vagueness of contours which is so important in the poem. The themes do not follow any stable metric patterns, and instead of progressing in a certain direction, they remain entirely unpredictable, reflecting the unconstrained nature of the faun's meditations.<\/p>\r\n

The era marked by the name of J\u00e1nos Ferencsik and Kobayashi Ken-Ichiro was followed by a new chapter in the history of the orchestra when in 1997 Zolt\u00e1n Kocsis became general music director until his death. In almost two decades the National Philharmonic Orchestra underwent renewal. After the death of Zolt\u00e1n Kocsis, the Ferenc Liszt Award-winning Zsolt Hamar held the post of Musical Director at the Hungarian National Philharmonic from March 2017 to August 2020.
