The anniversary of the great musician&#8217;s death will be marked once again this year by the ensembles that he once led. All of the pieces in the programme have some kind of connection, in terms of either genre or the thinking behind them, to the late pianist, conductor and composer.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ravel<\/strong>&#8216;s series <em>Le Tombeau de Couperin<\/em> is a fitting work in part because it is a remembrance of the composer&#8217;s deceased friends and also in part because, as a piano work scored for orchestra by the great artist himself, it shows us <strong>Zolt\u00e1n Kocsis<\/strong> the composer and conductor, who was passionate about arranging songs and piano pieces by his favourite great composers. It seems symbolic that this work is being performed under the baton of a representative, in the person of the American-Hungarian <strong>Korn\u00e9l Thomas<\/strong>, of the new generation of conductors following in Kocsis&#8217;s footsteps.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chopin<\/strong>&#8216;s <em>Piano Concerto No. 1 in E minor<\/em> is a memorial to Kocsis the pianist, who had been amazed by the soloist performing the composition, <strong>Tam\u00e1s \u00c9rdi<\/strong>, and left open the possibility of working together \u2013 specifically to perform this Chopin piano concerto.<\/p>\n<p>Also of symbolic significance is the fact that <strong>Zsolt Hamar<\/strong>, the ensemble&#8217;s music director, will take the podium to conduct the <strong>Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra<\/strong>, the <strong>Hungarian National Choir<\/strong> and four superb soloists \u2013 <strong>Kl\u00e1ra Kolonits, Marianna B\u00f3di, Istv\u00e1n Horv\u00e1th<\/strong> and <strong>Istv\u00e1n Kov\u00e1cs<\/strong> \u2013 in the world premi\u00e8re of a new work by a contemporary Hungarian composer. Born in 1969, <strong>Zolt\u00e1n Kov\u00e1cs<\/strong> is a member of the middle generation of Hungarian artists, one who plays bassoon in the Hungarian State Opera Orchestra in addition to his creative activities. It is more than likely that what enticed Ravel to arrange the piece for a relatively small ensemble was the hope of giving it broader exposure, and it is no wonder that he left out the <em>Fugue<\/em> and the <em>Toccata<\/em>, the former probably for formal reasons, and the latter in all likelihood because of issues with scoring it. He was eight years old, when he first appeared on a concert podium, and since then has regularly given concerts, played at festivals and been featured on television programs.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Tam\u00e1s was born prematurely in Budapest, Hungary in 1979, and as a result of an oxygen overdose in a\u00a0 incubator lost his eyesight. Tam\u00e1s' instructors, Erika Becht and G\u00e1bor Eckhardt use \"the structural method\" to teach Tam\u00e1s whereby he virtually \"recomposes\" the music he is being taught. This process has enabled him to learn many piano scores as well as 12 concertos without use of eyesight.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In 1995, Tam\u00e1s placed second at the Louis Braille International Music Competition in Moscow and two years later, despite being the youngest participant, he won first prize at the same competition. He was accepted in 1994 at the Vienna Music Academy into the class of Imola Jo\u00f3. His first recording was released in 1997 \u00a0and the second Mozart CD was released two years later\u00a0 with Tam\u00e1s Vasary and the Weiner-Sz\u00e1sz Chamber Orchestra.\r\nTam\u00e1s \u00c9rdi regularly plays under the batons of Tam\u00e1s V\u00e1s\u00e1ry, Rico Saccani and Uri Mayer. On the basis of his first Mozart CD and the recommendations of these conductors, Tam\u00e1s was accepted by the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto to study with Professor Leon Fleisher, Marc Durand, and Jenny Regehr at the Gleen Gould Professional Piano School, and he obtained the Artist Diploma in 2002.\u00a0In 2008\u00a0he\u00a0received the Junior Prima Prize Awarded to talented individuals under 30 and\u00a0was awarded with\u00a0the\u00a0Prima Primissima\u00a0prize in 2010, which is the most prestigious professional recognition for Hungarian individuals by the private sector. Since 2002 she has been a member of the Budapest State Opera House. In 1997, she won 2nd prize at the Third Budapest International Singing Competition and in 1997, the special prize at the Italian Toti dal Monte competition before winning 1st prize and the special award at the 2000 Hungarian Radio Singing Competition. In 2003, she came second and won the special prize at the International Haydn Singing Competition. In 1999, she participated in Duna Television's series of opera tales from Cluj. In 2005, she sang Judit in the film version of Bart\u00f3k's opera Prince Bluebeard's Castle. She has also been a guest performer in Austria, Holland, France and the United States. The era marked by the name of J\u00e1nos Ferencsik and Kobayashi Ken-Ichiro was followed by a new chapter in the history of the orchestra when in 1997 Zolt\u00e1n Kocsis became general music director until his death. In almost two decades the National Philharmonic Orchestra underwent renewal. After the death of Zolt\u00e1n Kocsis, the Ferenc Liszt Award-winning Zsolt Hamar held the post of Musical Director at the Hungarian National Philharmonic from March 2017 to August 2020. He previously worked with the orchestra as its first permanent conductor and built up an impressive international career.\r\n\r\nThe Orchestra is one of the top interpreters of the work of B\u00e9la Bart\u00f3k, and the albums of the <em>Bart\u00f3k New Series<\/em> have won numerous accolades in Hungary and abroad. The orchestra perform not only classics but also numerous other important works previously missing from the repertoire, many of which require a large orchestral apparatus. It attaches great importance to introducing contemporary Hungarian works to the audiences. It supports young musicians recently embarked on an international career. He launched his career by taking second place and the audience prize at the Hungarian Television International Conducting Competition. He has also won prizes at several other international competitions (taking second place at the Cadaqu\u00e9s Orchestra International Conducting Competition in Spain and first place at both the Portuguese Radio Conducting Competition and the Antonio Pedrotti International Conducting Competition in Trento, Italy). In 1997, he was invited by Zolt\u00e1n Kocsis to serve as first permanent conductor of the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra. After working as Lorin Maazel\u2019s assistant at the Salzburg Festival in 1998, he spent the years from 2000 to 2009 as the music director of the Pannon Philharmonic while simultaneously serving as first guest conductor of the Orchestra di Padova e del Veneto.\r\n\r\nA regular guest with orchestras and at concert halls around Europe, Japan and the USA, he has also appeared with nearly every symphonic ensemble in Hungary. Hamar has regularly conducted at the Hungarian State Opera since 2001 and is a welcome guest at opera houses in other countries as well. Between 2005 and 2011, he worked as a permanent conductor at the world-famous Opernhaus Z\u00fcrich. He has recorded works by Liszt together with the Hungarian National Philharmonic and Mahler\u2019s <em>First Symphony<\/em> with the Pannon Philharmonic.
