What is it like to have a roaring lion on the stage? There is no reason to be frightened of the latter, as it will not leap out into the auditorium. Instead, it is a unique instrument that will be one of many making their sounds in E\u00f6tv\u00f6s&#8217;s piece <em>Speaking Drums<\/em>. To be played between two of the Hungarian composer&#8217;s shorter works in the first half, it actually involves a percussion soloist teaching his instruments how to speak, mutter and shriek poems, before playing the rhythm to the words on his instrument, and this is what provides the melody for the orchestra. There will no translation of the poems, as the verses by S\u00e1ndor We\u00f6res are so-called nonsense poems, words without meaning, with a little bit of Sanskrit text also added in at the end. Not enough? After the interval, the audience will also get a glimpse of hell \u2013 as imagined by Liszt based on his reading of Dante. The massive <em>Dante Symphony<\/em> is Liszt&#8217;s setting of purgatory into musical notes. Wagner talked him out of depicting heaven, afraid that it would prove banal. It boasts a rich repertoire chiefly consisting of orchestra-accompanied and a capella choral music, as well as oratorios, ranging from works by the early-Baroque Sch\u00fctz to Bach, Viennese Classical, 19<sup>th<\/sup> and 20<sup>th<\/sup>-century composers, and contemporary music. The National Choir is open to every genre and is dedicated to performing rarely heard works. While the backbone of the repertoire consists of 19<sup>th<\/sup>-century oratorios, the National Choir attaches great importance to performing contemporary music. The era marked by the name of J\u00e1nos Ferencsik and Kobayashi Ken-Ichiro was followed by a new chapter in the history of the orchestra when in 1997 Zolt\u00e1n Kocsis became general music director until his death. In almost two decades the National Philharmonic Orchestra underwent renewal. After the death of Zolt\u00e1n Kocsis, the Ferenc Liszt Award-winning Zsolt Hamar held the post of Musical Director at the Hungarian National Philharmonic from March 2017 to August 2020.
