Mozart was 18 years old when he composed his four-movement <em>Symphony in A major<\/em>. At the mid-point of his life, one could say. As he had almost exactly that much time left \u2013 with a difference of only a few weeks \u2013 before he met his fate. It is a truly professional composition, opening and closing fresh and lively movements, an andante that refrains from overdoing the passions and an elegant minuet. Georges Bizet was in no more than his 17th spring when he started work on his likewise four-movement <em>Symphony in C major<\/em>. This was his first serious effort in the genre. (Mozart had already written a number of symphonies before the A major, and would go on to compose a dozen more afterwards.) Interestingly, the first movement of the young Frenchman&#8217;s work resembles the music of Mozart. The second movement recalls Berlioz, with a romantically soaring melody highly appropriate for the year 1855. Between the two pieces by youngsters, the orchestra will play the music of a mature man who kept a bit of his childhood with him well past middle age. Even in his advanced years, Paul Hindemith enjoyed playing with his model railroad at home. His music also reveals a kind of playful streak. The symphony as a genre had only recently evolved from the <em>sinfonia<\/em>, the introduction to an Italian opera, and it was right around 1770 when it took on its four-movement format of serious musical expression at the hands of composers from southern Germany and Vienna. In July 1773, Mozart was in Vienna seeking a position with the court, and even though his hopes came to naught, this closer acquaintanceship with the Viennese style had a great impact on his musical development. The pieces he composed during this stay in the Imperial City included six string quartets, and the effect of writing chamber music can immediately be felt in the remarkable main theme played by the strings in the opening movement. In the serenade-like slow movement, the string players only remove their mutes in the suddenly scintillating final bars. His highly varied path in life took him from Germany to the United States and, from there, to Switzerland, as he achieved success as a teacher, an author of books on music theory, a violinist and violist and as a globetrotting conductor. He wrote his three-movement <em>Concerto<\/em> for woodwinds, harp and orchestra in 1949, after receiving a commission from Columbia University. While the woodwinds (flute, oboe, clarinet and bassoon) and the harp take the lead as soloists, the brass players (two horns, two trumpets and one trombone) perform as part of the orchestra. Prevailing throughout this cheerful and brilliantly structured work is the style so typical of Hindemith: an intricate network of parts, each living an independent life and answering and counterpointing each other. Allegro vivace<\/em>\r\n\r\nGeorges Bizet (1838\u20131875) was 17 years old and still a student when he composed and, with an assured hand, scored his surprisingly mature and imaginative <em>Symphony in C major<\/em>, which is often compared to the overture to <em>A Midsummer Night's Dream<\/em> written by the 18-year-old Mendelssohn. Heard in the secondary theme of the first movement and in the broad cantilenas of the second is the voice of Bizet the opera composer. With its own measured angularity, the strictly structured and Baroque-influenced middle section of the second movement forms such an enormous contrast with the full-blooded Romantic sound of the rest of the movement that it almost seems like a caricature. The third movement, despite being termed a minuet by the composer, is really more of a lively scherzo, with a folkish middle section that sounds like pipes playing. Vying with the first movement in terms of both scope and development, the finale is an enchanting fairy dance in the style of Mendelssohn. Bizet never published his <em>Symphony in C major<\/em> or mentioned it in his correspondence, and his early biographers did not know about its existence, either. In 1988, he received a special prize at Hungarian Radio\u2019s National Woodwind Competition.\r\n\r\nIn 1990, he won first prize and the grand prize at the international competition organized by the International Clarinet Association (ICA) in Quebec, Canada. As a university student, he received a Yamaha scholarship. He earned a degree with honours in clarinet and art pedagogy in 1991.\r\n\r\nIn that same year, he gained a spot with the Hungarian State Opera Orchestra as first clarinetist. At the same time, he also became a member of the Budapest Wind Ensemble (under the artistic direction of K\u00e1lm\u00e1n Berkes).\r\n\r\nBetween 1992 and 2000, he served as the Budapest Festival Orchestra\u2019s solo clarinetist. Zolt\u00e1n Kocsis invited him to join the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra as its solo clarinetist in 2000. In 2002, he was voted the ensemble\u2019s Artist of the Year.\r\n\r\nHe has been teaching at the Liszt Academy since 1993, initially as a teaching assistant, then as an assistant professor, and later as an associate professor. In 2013, he obtained his doctorate (DLA). He completed his habilitation in 2019 and became a full professor the following year. He took over the leadership of the wind department at the Liszt Academy in 2022.\r\n\r\nHe holds master classes at the most famous universities in the USA, Europe, Israel, Japan and Iceland, and regularly serves as a jury member or the jury chairman at clarinet and chamber competitions both in Hungary and abroad.\r\n\r\nAs a soloist, he has performed with most of Hungary\u2019s leading symphony orchestras. She held her thesis concert in 1992, qualifying her as a harpist and harp teacher.\r\n\r\nShe then went on to give harp lessons at the Liszt Academy in Budapest between 1996 and 2000.\r\n\r\nA member of the board of the World Harp Congress since the early 2000s, she was elected to the organisation's New Music Committee in 2010.\r\n\r\nSince 2012, she has taught harpists at the King Saint Stephen High School of Music. Her students have won many Hungarian and international awards at harp competitions. In 2019, she served as a member of the jury of the Fifth Szeged International Harp Competition.\r\n\r\nShe has collaborated on numerous recordings used for CDs, radio and television. One of these was a release from the Marco Polo record label, which compiled works by Kurt Atterberg, including his Trio Concertante for Violin, Cello and Harp, on which she was joined by violinist Andr\u00e1s Kiss and cellist Gy\u00f6rgy Kert\u00e9sz. The era marked by the name of J\u00e1nos Ferencsik and Kobayashi Ken-Ichiro was followed by a new chapter in the history of the orchestra when in 1997 Zolt\u00e1n Kocsis became general music director until his death. In almost two decades the National Philharmonic Orchestra underwent renewal. After the death of Zolt\u00e1n Kocsis, the Ferenc Liszt Award-winning Zsolt Hamar held the post of Musical Director at the Hungarian National Philharmonic from March 2017 to August 2020. He previously worked with the orchestra as its first permanent conductor and built up an impressive international career.\r\n\r\nThe Orchestra is one of the top interpreters of the work of B\u00e9la Bart\u00f3k, and the albums of the <em>Bart\u00f3k New Series<\/em> have won numerous accolades in Hungary and abroad. The orchestra perform not only classics but also numerous other important works previously missing from the repertoire, many of which require a large orchestral apparatus. It attaches great importance to introducing contemporary Hungarian works to the audiences. It has given many popular chamber music concerts and hosted events for young people.\r\n\r\nThe orchestra\u2019s concerts have featured world-famous soloists and conductors. It supports young musicians recently embarked on an international career. In recent decades, the National Philharmonic Orchestra has appeared in the greatest venues and festivals around the world, including the Avery Fisher Hall in New York, the Suntory Hall in Tokyo, the Birmingham Symphony Hall, the Megaron in Athens, Bozar Centre in Brussels, the Enescu Festival in Bucharest, the Beethoven Festival in Bogot\u00e1, as well as the Colmar and Canary Island Festivals.
