It is a tiny city, this is true, but one in a picturesque setting, surrounded by great mountains. It was here in Vaduz, in the middle of Liechtenstein, where Josef Rheinberger was born in 1839. In time he would become an enormously respected German master, mentioned in the same breath as Brahms. Then, at the height of the 20th century, his work fell into oblivion. However, it is worth rediscovering \u2013 anyone who has ever heard his <em>Mass in E-flat major<\/em> can be certain of that. The second piece will be a Hungarian composition to be sung by the choir. Around 15 years ago, five composers with more-or-less similar principles \u2013 Mikl\u00f3s Csemiczky, Levente Gy\u00f6ngy\u00f6si, Gy\u00f6rgy Selmeczi, Gy\u00f6rgy Orb\u00e1n and J\u00e1nos Vajda \u2013 decided to jointly compose music to the unchanging parts of the Roman Catholic mass. Being played from their <em>Missa Quinque Auctorum<\/em> at this concert will be Gy\u00f6ngy\u00f6si\u2019s contribution, the <em>Gloria<\/em>. The interval will be followed by Schubert\u2019s <em>Mass in E-flat major<\/em>, the last such work that the composer wrote in his life. He did not live to see it premi\u00e8red. It is a sombre composition, with few bright colours. Especially heart-wrenching is the final movement, the <em>Agnus Dei<\/em>, in which Schubert also evokes the so-called cross motif. He also completed master classes with Johannes Moesus, J\u00fcrgen J\u00fcrgens and Yuri Simonov. He has been active as a choir leader since the age of 22 and served for nearly 17 years as the choirmaster of the Vasas Ensemble Chorus. In 2002, he founded the Lajos Vass Chamber Choir, which he led until 2017. He has also worked as the music director of Debrecen\u2019s Csokonai Theatre and later the National Theatre of P\u00e9cs, as well as holding the position of chief choirmaster of the Hungarian Radio Choir. He has appeared as a guest conductor and choirmaster with numerous Hungarian symphonic orchestras and professional choirs. Somos has also made guest appearances with orchestras in other countries, including the <em>Salerno<\/em> Philharmonic <em>Orchestra<\/em> in Italy and, in Japan, the Sakata Philharmonic Orchestra. He is frequently invited to Spain, Italy, Russia, Romania, Greece, Macedonia, Austria, Germany and China as both a choirmaster and conductor. A teacher at the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music, he is regularly asked to serve as a jury member of musical competitions and festivals. He serves as the vice president of the <em>Hungarian Association<\/em> of Choirs, Orchestras and Folk Ensembles (K\u00d3TA). His professional work was recognised with a Rub\u00e1nyi Award, which was followed by a Liszt Award in 2014. In 2015, he earned his DLA, graduating summa cum laude. Born in Liechtenstein, he spent much of his life in Munich working as a court conductor and as a teacher at the city's music conservatory, where his more notable students included Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari, Engelbert Humperdinck, Richard Strauss and Wilhelm Furtw\u00e4ngler. As a composer, he left behind a diverse oeuvre and is best remembered for his organ and church music, as well as for his operas, symphonies, numerous chamber works and choral pieces. His sacred works bear witness to a composer who resisted the strict, conservative and puritanical aesthetic of German Cecilian church music in order to pursue his own path. In 1878, he composed his <em>Mass in E-flat major<\/em>, his third in the genre, for double choir and no instrumental accompaniment. He dedicated the work to Pope Leo XIII, who showed his gratitude by bestowing a papal decoration on the composer the following year. And then the listener becomes part of a world drama as the hair-raising <em>Domine Deus<\/em> segment of the <em>Gloria<\/em> is followed by the constantly recurring timpani tremolos of the <em>Credo<\/em>, and then by the <em>Sanctus<\/em>, shocking with its key changes of related thirds and the tragic-sounding <em>Agnus Dei<\/em>, which was constructed around a cross motif inherited from the Baroque period. The era marked by the name of J\u00e1nos Ferencsik and Kobayashi Ken-Ichiro was followed by a new chapter in the history of the orchestra when in 1997 Zolt\u00e1n Kocsis became general music director until his death. In almost two decades the National Philharmonic Orchestra underwent renewal. After the death of Zolt\u00e1n Kocsis, the Ferenc Liszt Award-winning Zsolt Hamar held the post of Musical Director at the Hungarian National Philharmonic from March 2017 to August 2020. He previously worked with the orchestra as its first permanent conductor and built up an impressive international career.\r\n\r\nThe Orchestra is one of the top interpreters of the work of B\u00e9la Bart\u00f3k, and the albums of the <em>Bart\u00f3k New Series<\/em> have won numerous accolades in Hungary and abroad. The orchestra perform not only classics but also numerous other important works previously missing from the repertoire, many of which require a large orchestral apparatus. It attaches great importance to introducing contemporary Hungarian works to the audiences. It has given many popular chamber music concerts and hosted events for young people.\r\n\r\nThe orchestra\u2019s concerts have featured world-famous soloists and conductors. It supports young musicians recently embarked on an international career. In recent decades, the National Philharmonic Orchestra has appeared in the greatest venues and festivals around the world, including the Avery Fisher Hall in New York, the Suntory Hall in Tokyo, the Birmingham Symphony Hall, the Megaron in Athens, Bozar Centre in Brussels, the Enescu Festival in Bucharest, the Beethoven Festival in Bogot\u00e1, as well as the Colmar and Canary Island Festivals.
