Portraits of women in musical notes \u2013 this could be a fitting title for this concert. The first is an ideal image of a woman’s face, as Bart\u00f3k saw Stefi Geyer, a young girl studying violin with Jen\u0151 Hubay. He wrote a concerto with a beautiful opening melody for her. After corresponding for a bit, however, they split up. The composer of the concerto renounced the work and only used the first movement as part of Two Portraits<\/em>, with the subtitle One Ideal<\/em>, appending to it another with the title One Grotesque<\/em>, a sarcastic version of the lovely basic theme. The Piano Concerto No. 3<\/em> also begins with a female portrait. A royal princess appears in a fabulous forest. The orchestra recalls Wagner’s “forest murmurs” from Siegfried<\/em> (the key \u2013 E major \u2013 is also identical), with the piano theme perhaps reminding us of the verbunkos<\/em>-flavoured melody of the female figure in The Wooden Prince<\/em>. The gravely-ill composer wrote the work for Ditta P\u00e1sztory, his second wife. The interval will be followed by Bluebeard’s Castle<\/em>, a work that Bart\u00f3k composed during his first marriage. It is a parable of the mysterious Man, whose secret the Woman wishes to learn at any cost. The Man is none other than the composer himself. Or would this be too banal an explanation? There is a legend that someone once annoyed Bart\u00f3k with a conjecture along these lines. “And what if I am Judith?”<\/em> \u2013 he retorted in irritation. Bluebeard's Castle was composed in 1911, prompted by a competition for new operas announced by the Lip\u00f3tv\u00e1ros Casino. The work written on a libretto by B\u00e9la Bal\u00e1zs was rejected by the competition jury. Bart\u00f3k later (in 1912 and 1918, then again in 1921) changed the score. The premiere took place in Budapest in 1918, the conductor was Egisto Tango. \"Recollections and presentiments make Bart\u00f3k specially sensitive to Bal\u00e1zs' one act drama for two characters. However, there was also another kind of external motivation. On the one hand, the text is clearly related to Wagner's Lohengrin, an association touching on Bart\u00f3k's deep and indelible Wagner experiences. In more than just the musical sense heard in dozens of motives and sounds of the opera, this experience also involves the ideas and whole ideology of Wagner's music dramas. Bart\u00f3k (and B\u00e9la Bal\u00e1zs) inherited from Wagner the idea of love as a saving force. The prohibition motive in Bal\u00e1zs' one-act piece is a direct reference to Lohengrin (Nie sollst du mich befragen - \"You are going to see, but never ask, Whatever you see, never ask!\") as well as the pair of the chosen male and fallible female stands for the Wagnerian idea of the artist's desire to descend from \"the heights of spiritual life\" to mix with ordinary people and the infeasibility of fulfilling that desire. The other great connection and inspiration in the field of genre once again takes us, through Bal\u00e1zs and in this case, Bal\u00e1zs' source of inspiration, Maeterlinck to Debussy and his Pell\u00e9as and M\u00e9lisande (1902), or even more to Ariane et Barbe-bleue, a three act opera premiered in Paris in 1907. Dezs\u0151 R\u00e1nki completed his studies in 1973, when he graduated from the Budapest Music Academy as a pupil of P\u00e1l Kadosa and Ferenc Rados. While still an 18 year old student, he won first prize at the Zwickau International Schumann Competition and has given concerts ever since. He regularly performs in most European countries and has toured both North and South America on a number of occasions. He visits Japan every 2 to 3 years. He has played among others with the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Philharmonic, the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, the Orchestre National de Paris, the Tokyo NHK Orchestra and worked with a host of distinguished conductors such as Sir Georg Solti, S\u00e1ndor V\u00e9gh, Lorin Maazel and Zubin Mehta. He is an active chamber music performer and in recent years, has given 10 to 15 concerts a year with his partner and wife Edit Klukon, performing music for\u00a0 piano duet and two pianos.
