It might seem surprising, but Schubert did not write a Rosamunde overture. There was, instead, The Magic Harp, which was later renamed Rosamunde for reasons unknown.\u00a0 The Magic Harp overture has been known as the Rosamunde overture ever since. He has also won prizes at several other international competitions (taking second place at the Cadaqu\u00e9s Orchestra International Conducting Competition in Spain and first place at both the Portuguese Radio Conducting Competition and the Antonio Pedrotti International Conducting Competition in Trento, Italy). In 1997, he was invited by Zolt\u00e1n Kocsis to serve as first permanent conductor of the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra. After working as Lorin Maazel\u2019s assistant at the Salzburg Festival in 1998, he spent the years from 2000 to 2009 as the music director of the Pannon Philharmonic while simultaneously serving as first guest conductor of the Orchestra di Padova e del Veneto.\r\n\r\nA regular guest with orchestras and at concert halls around Europe, Japan and the USA, he has also appeared with nearly every symphonic ensemble in Hungary. Hamar has regularly conducted at the Hungarian State Opera since 2001 and is a welcome guest at opera houses in other countries as well. Between 2005 and 2011, he worked as a permanent conductor at the world-famous Opernhaus Z\u00fcrich. He has recorded works by Liszt together with the Hungarian National Philharmonic and Mahler\u2019s First Symphony<\/em> with the Pannon Philharmonic. Ezt a mindenki \u00e1ltal szeretett darabot helyesebb volna Var\u00e1zsh\u00e1rfa-nyit\u00e1nyk\u00e9nt emlegetni, hiszen eredetileg ehhez az 1820-ban keletkezett meseoper\u00e1hoz \u00edrta Schubert. A Var\u00e1zsh\u00e1rfa nyolc el\u0151ad\u00e1s ut\u00e1n leker\u00fclt a m\u0171sorr\u00f3l, \u00e9s azon nyomban elfelejtett\u00e9k. Nyit\u00e1ny\u00e1t csup\u00e1n a kiad\u00f3 kapcsolta \u00f6ssze a Rosamunda-k\u00eds\u00e9r\u0151zen\u00e9vel, majdnem harminc \u00e9vvel Schubert hal\u00e1la ut\u00e1n.  <\/p>

A Rosamunda, Ciprus kir\u00e1lyn\u0151je c. sz\u00edndarabot 1823-ban t\u0171zte m\u0171sorra a Theater an der Wien. A darab szerz\u0151je ugyanaz a Helmina von Ch\u00e9zy volt, aki Carl Maria von Weber Euryanthe-j\u00e1nak librett\u00f3j\u00e1t is \u00edrta, komoly akad\u00e1lyokat g\u00f6rd\u00edtve ezzel a zeneszerz\u0151 \u00fatj\u00e1ba. Mind\u00f6ssze k\u00e9tszer adt\u00e1k B\u00e9csben, Schubert k\u00eds\u00e9r\u0151zen\u00e9j\u00e9vel, aki azonban nem \u00edrt \u00faj nyit\u00e1nyt a darabhoz, ehelyett egy m\u00e1sik oper\u00e1j\u00e1nak, az Alfonso \u00e9s Estrell\u00e1-nak a nyit\u00e1ny\u00e1t haszn\u00e1lta fel \u00fajra (ezt az oper\u00e1t Schubert \u00e9let\u00e9ben egy\u00e1ltal\u00e1n nem adt\u00e1k el\u0151).<\/p>

A Var\u00e1zsh\u00e1rfa\/Rosamunda-nyit\u00e1ny borong\u00f3s c-moll bevezet\u00e9ssel kezd\u0151dik, melyet felszabadult hangulat\u00fa C-d\u00far allegro k\u00f6vet. Nincs hi\u00e1ny pazarul hangszerelt, vonz\u00f3 dallamokban:  a nyit\u00e1ny, miut\u00e1n megszabadult mindk\u00e9t hozz\u00e1kapcsol\u00f3d\u00f3 sikertelen sz\u00ednpadi m\u0171t\u0151l, mint \u00f6n\u00e1ll\u00f3 darab foglalta el meg\u00e9rdemelt hely\u00e9t Schubert legn\u00e9pszer\u0171bb kompoz\u00edci\u00f3i k\u00f6z\u00f6tt.<\/P>{:}{:en}

This beloved work should more properly be called the overture to Die Zauberharfe (\"The Magic Harp\"), the fairytale opera Schubert wrote in 1820.  After eight performances, the opera was taken off the program and quickly forgotten.  The overture was attached to Schubert's Rosamunde music only when it was published, almost thirty years after the composer's death.<\/p>

 <\/p>

In 1823, Schubert composed incidental music for a play called Rosamunde, Princess of Cyprus by Helmina von Ch\u00e9zy, the playwright and poet who also wrote the libretto to the opera Euryanthe by Carl Maria von Weber, thereby putting considerable obstacles in the way of Weber's genius.  Rosamunde, which was also less than a theatrical masterpiece, was produced, and performed twice, at the Theater an der Wien.  Schubert wrote the incidental mujsic, but he did not compose an original overture; instead, he recycled the overture from another of his operas, Alfonso und Estrella, which was never been performed at all during his lifetime.<\/p>

I have never written anything so sad, and the score must come out in mourning,\u2019 Brahms wrote to his publisher Fritz Simrock shortly before the Symphony No. 2 was due to receive its first performance on 30 December 1877. However, at the premi?re given under the baton of Hans Richter, it transpired that the composer was only joking and to Simrock\u2019s immense relief the work proved to be unexpectedly light in tone (at least in comparison with Brahms\u2019s other compositions) and met with considerable success.<\/p>\r\n

\r\nThe \u2018melancholic\u2019 tone Brahms was ironically referring to is in fact only evident in the second movement, while the first is best described as \u2018pastorale\u2019 \u2013 all the more so, given that Brahms was spending his summer holiday in the beautiful Carinthian mountains when he wrote the symphony. The third movementcan be regarded as a somewhat awkward joke. The breezy oboe theme becomes, by means of a change of metre and character, its own caricature.
