This work from the 26-year-old Beethoven demands extraordinary vocal virtuosity and will be performed by the leading dramatic sopranos of the Hungarian State Opera. Beethoven wrote Symphony No. 4 between two particularly challenging symphonies, an island of happiness among the heroic-themed, serious works of his middle period. It is a light, at times playfully spirited work, full of exciting twists and turns, such as in the first movement, which surprisingly transitions to a life-affirming, optimistic sound after a dark, ominous opening. The second half of the concert will feature a performance of the Choral Fantasy, one of the most special pieces in musical history, by the Hungarian National Choir, the incredibly talented F\u00fcl\u00f6p R\u00e1nki and a selection of outstanding vocal soloists, conducted by the Liszt Prize-winning conductor Csaba Somos. This deliberately bombastic composition is of particular significance in the life of Beethoven, as he composed it 210 years ago as the resounding finale to a benefit concert for composers. Beethoven had intended to find a place for all the performers at the concert in this outstanding piece, which bore similarities in its character and sound to the final movement of Symphony No. He also completed master classes with Johannes\u00a0Moesus, J\u00fcrgen\u00a0J\u00fcrgens\u00a0and Yuri Simonov. He has been active as a choir leader since the age of 22 and served for nearly 17 years as the choirmaster of the\u00a0Vasas\u00a0Ensemble Chorus. In 2002, he founded the Lajos Vass Chamber Choir, which he led until 2017. He has also worked as the music director of the Debrecen\u00a0Csokonai\u00a0Theatre and later of the National Theatre of\u00a0P\u00e9cs, as well as held the position of chief choirmaster of the Hungarian Radio Choir. He has appeared as a guest conductor with numerous Hungarian symphonic orchestras and professional choirs. Csaba\u00a0Somos\u00a0has also made international guest appearances, including the Salerno Philharmonic Orchestra in Italy and the Sakata Philharmonic Orchestra in Japan and\u00a0is frequently invited\u00a0to Spain, Italy, Russia, Romania, Greece, Macedonia, Austria, Germany and China both as a choral- and orchestra conductor.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A teacher at the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music, he\u00a0is regularly asked\u00a0to serve as a member of the jury of music competitions and festivals. He is vice president of the Hungarian Association of Choirs, Orchestras and Folk Ensembles (K\u00d3TA). His professional work\u00a0was recognised\u00a0with a\u00a0Rub\u00e1nyi\u00a0Award, which was followed by a Liszt Award in 2014. In 2015, he earned his DLA, graduating\u00a0<em>summa cum laude<\/em>. I applied to attend a high school specialising in mathematics and computer science and planned to become an economist.\r\n\r\nLike most of the high school boys, I played music in a rock band, and was one of the frequent performers at the SamSem (that is, Nincs egy vaSam Sem \u2013 I don\u2019t have a penny) Rock Club with my group Old\u2019s Cool, in which I was a bass player.\r\n\r\nAlthough I always felt some kind of connection to music, at the time I considered it mostly a more sophisticated way of meeting girls. Having achieved this, I was about to go on a date with a girl I had long had my eye on when my high school singing teacher, Ildik\u00f3 Pog\u00e1ny, grabbed me by the arm \u2013 forcing me to cancel the date \u2013 and dragged me to Aunt Lujza N\u00e9meth for an audition. She was the one who first said I was going to be a singer. I began to warm up to the possibility, and I soon fell under its spell. Thanks to Aunt Lujza\u2019s painstaking preparation, I was admitted to the Liszt Academy\u2019s voice programme in 2004, where I studied in the opera department under \u00c9va Marton.\r\n\r\nThe world of theatrical singing first captivated me through my classes with actors. In 2011, I made my debut as Masetto at the National Theatre of Gy\u0151r and then at the Hungarian State Opera House. It was somewhere here that my passion for teamwork that today is fed by singing in the choir started to develop inside me. I spent three years at the Operetta Theatre, also appearing in B\u00e9k\u00e9scsaba and Sz\u00e9kesfeh\u00e9rv\u00e1r, as well as forming a close working relationship with the National Theatre of Miskolc, whose opera productions I have been taking part in for years now.\r\n\r\nAlthough I\u2019ve spent the better part of my career as a soloist, working as part of a team has always been closest to my heart. I feel an energy like no other when everyone, ranging from the technical staff to the stage manager and the leading soloist, dedicates themselves to the same goal: to perform a work. At such times, I feel like I am part of a great whole working with all its vibrations to give something to people: to enchant them, to give them pleasure, to make them think, and to elicit a sense of catharsis from the audience.\r\n\r\nI found the perfect unity of musical professionalism and teamwork in choral singing. In 2016, I was given a spot in the Honv\u00e9d Male Choir, which was followed in 2017 by a position in the Hungarian National Choir.\r\n\r\nI like to be here because there is no other place in Hungary where I can sing such a wide range of classical music, and where we can perform the works at a professional level and as a united team. In almost two decades the National Philharmonic Orchestra underwent renewal. After the death of Zolt\u00e1n Kocsis, the Ferenc Liszt Award-winning Zsolt Hamar held the post of Musical Director at the Hungarian National Philharmonic from March 2017 to August 2020. Over the course of that more than a quarter of a century, the ensemble became Hungary\u2019s leading professional choir, known for its performances of vocal compositions accompanied by orchestra, oratorios and a cappella works.\r\n\r\nAccordingly, its repertoire is extremely rich and open in every direction, encompassing the early Baroque composer Heinrich Sch\u00fctz, Bach, the Viennese Classical School, and the composers of the 19th and 20th centuries and of today, without prejudice to genre.\r\n\r\nCsaba Somos has served as the ensemble\u2019s artistic director since 1 January 2016.\r\n\r\nIn addition to performing concerts in Hungary, the ensemble regularly accepts invitations to appear abroad, having sung in numerous nations in Europe, as well as in Israel and Japan.
