The African-American bandleader, pianist, and composer Edward Kennedy “Duke” Ellington
\n(1899\u20131974) was one of the most influential figures in the world of jazz and American music.
\nHe received the nickname “Duke” from his childhood friends, owing to his elegant style of
\ndress and aristocratic manner. Duke Ellington’s impact cannot be overestimated. He has
\nbeen credited with nearly 1,000 compositions. Ellington first took an interest in religious
\nmusic in the 1960s. This part of his career began in 1963 when he wrote an oratorio-like
\ncomposition featuring intimate religious songs at the request of an African-American cultural
\nfestival in Chicago. After 1965, he composed another three of these church pieces in which
\nthe vocal and instrumental soloists were accompanied by dancers. In his book Duke, Derek
\nJewell wrote that in the Sacred Concerts, “jazz is incorporated with elements of European
\nreligious choral music… Duke decided to create his own songs in praise of God, who was very

He earned his degree at the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest, studying first in voice, music pedagogy and choral conducting courses, and afterwards in the conducting course led by Ervin Luk\u00e1cs and Tam\u00e1s\u00a0G\u00e1l. He also completed master classes with Johannes\u00a0Moesus, J\u00fcrgen\u00a0J\u00fcrgens\u00a0and Yuri Simonov. He has been active as a choir leader since the age of 22 and served for nearly 17 years as the choirmaster of the\u00a0Vasas\u00a0Ensemble Chorus. In 2002, he founded the Lajos Vass Chamber Choir, which he led until 2017. He has also worked as the music director of the Debrecen\u00a0Csokonai\u00a0Theatre and later of the National Theatre of\u00a0P\u00e9cs, as well as held the position of chief choirmaster of the Hungarian Radio Choir. He has appeared as a guest conductor with numerous Hungarian symphonic orchestras and professional choirs. Csaba\u00a0Somos\u00a0has also made international guest appearances, including the Salerno Philharmonic Orchestra in Italy and the Sakata Philharmonic Orchestra in Japan and\u00a0is frequently invited\u00a0to Spain, Italy, Russia, Romania, Greece, Macedonia, Austria, Germany and China both as a choral- and orchestra conductor.<\/p>\r\n
A teacher at the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music, he\u00a0is regularly asked\u00a0to serve as a member of the jury of music competitions and festivals. He is vice president of the Hungarian Association of Choirs, Orchestras and Folk Ensembles (K\u00d3TA). His professional work\u00a0was recognised\u00a0with a\u00a0Rub\u00e1nyi\u00a0Award, which was followed by a Liszt Award in 2014. In 2015, he earned his DLA, graduating\u00a0summa cum laude<\/em>. Over the course of that more than a quarter of a century, the ensemble became Hungary\u2019s leading professional choir, known for its performances of vocal compositions accompanied by orchestra, oratorios and a cappella works.\r\n\r\nAccordingly, its repertoire is extremely rich and open in every direction, encompassing the early Baroque composer Heinrich Sch\u00fctz, Bach, the Viennese Classical School, and the composers of the 19th and 20th centuries and of today, without prejudice to genre.\r\n\r\nCsaba Somos has served as the ensemble\u2019s artistic director since 1 January 2016.\r\n\r\nIn addition to performing concerts in Hungary, the ensemble regularly accepts invitations to appear abroad, having sung in numerous nations in Europe, as well as in Israel and Japan. Not only did the choir serve as the chorus in the Hungarian National Philharmonic\u2019s highly acclaimed series of productions of the operas of Richard Strauss, several of its members also took the stage as soloists.
