After Haydn&#8217;s &#8220;Missa in Angustiis&#8221; (Mass for Troubled Times), which only later gained the title of Nelson Mass in tribute to the English admiral, we will enjoy a composition written in 2009 at the behest of Csaba Somogy. Ricercare is a personal interpretation of a well-known Biblical text, an extract from St. Paul&#8217;s first epistle to the Corinthians, which is also immortalised in St Paul&#8217;s Hymn to Love. As its creator Gy\u00f6rgy Orb\u00e1n puts it, through experimentation and reading he found a &#8220;marriage of fugues&#8221; at the centre of the piece. This is why the Kossuth prize-winning composer chose a title that references not only the early Baroque fugues, but also the idea of searching inherent in the Italian word &#8216;ricercare&#8217;. He also completed master classes with Johannes\u00a0Moesus, J\u00fcrgen\u00a0J\u00fcrgens\u00a0and Yuri Simonov. He has been active as a choir leader since the age of 22 and served for nearly 17 years as the choirmaster of the\u00a0Vasas\u00a0Ensemble Chorus. In 2002, he founded the Lajos Vass Chamber Choir, which he led until 2017. He has also worked as the music director of the Debrecen\u00a0Csokonai\u00a0Theatre and later of the National Theatre of\u00a0P\u00e9cs, as well as held the position of chief choirmaster of the Hungarian Radio Choir. He has appeared as a guest conductor with numerous Hungarian symphonic orchestras and professional choirs. Csaba\u00a0Somos\u00a0has also made international guest appearances, including the Salerno Philharmonic Orchestra in Italy and the Sakata Philharmonic Orchestra in Japan and\u00a0is frequently invited\u00a0to Spain, Italy, Russia, Romania, Greece, Macedonia, Austria, Germany and China both as a choral- and orchestra conductor.<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A teacher at the Ferenc Liszt Academy of Music, he\u00a0is regularly asked\u00a0to serve as a member of the jury of music competitions and festivals. He is vice president of the Hungarian Association of Choirs, Orchestras and Folk Ensembles (K\u00d3TA). His professional work\u00a0was recognised\u00a0with a\u00a0Rub\u00e1nyi\u00a0Award, which was followed by a Liszt Award in 2014. In 2015, he earned his DLA, graduating\u00a0<em>summa cum laude<\/em>. A Sanctus (\u201eSzent vagy\u201d) t\u00e9tel lass\u00fa, \u00e9rz\u00e9kenyen harmoniz\u00e1lt zen\u00e9vel kezd\u0151dik, s az Agnus Dei (\u201eIsten b\u00e1r\u00e1nya\u201d) els\u0151 fele is composed a high mass for the name day of Maria Josepha, wife of Prince Nicholas<\/p>\r\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Esterh\u00e1zy II. Composed in 1798, the year Creation was premi?red, the mass appears as \u2018Missa in Angustiis\u2019 or \u2018Mass for Troubled Times\u2019 in Haydn\u2019s autograph list of works. The curious title refers to the Napoleonic wars that were threatening Europe at the time. The work takes its nickname from the British Admiral Lord Nelson who, together with Lady Hamilton, visited Haydn in Vienna in 1800. On this occasion the composer organised a performance of the mass, which had been composed at the time of the Admiral\u2019s victory at Aboukir Bay in 1798. From that time onwards the mass was referred to as \u2018Nelson Mass\u2019.\r\nThe D-minor movements (Kyrie and Benedictus) emphasise the ominous character indicated in the original title, while the fast-moving, brilliant D-major movements counterbalance the sombre sonority with power and light. The two movements with the longest text, the Gloria and the Credo, are each divided into three large, slow\u2013fast\u2013slow sections. The Sanctus begins with slow, subtly harmonised music, and the starting section of Agnus Dei, performed by the quartet of the soloists, serves as a slow introduction. The choir members are current and former students of V\u00e1rosmajori Secondary School, Budapest.\r\nThe former students attend different universities in Budapest. In the past 25 years the choir has performed at a great number of concerts, festivals and choir competitions promoting the choir pieces of Zolt\u00e1n Kod\u00e1ly, B\u00e9la Bart\u00f3k and contemporary Hungarian composers. Contemporary Hungarian composers have key roles in the repertoire of Angelica Girls' Choir. Presenting and endearing contemporary music pieces resulted in the friendship of famous and outstanding Hungarian contemporary composers (Erzs\u00e9bet Sz\u0151nyi, Mikl\u00f3s Kocs\u00e1r, Boldizs\u00e1r Cs\u00edky, Gy\u00f6rgy Orb\u00e1n, P\u00e9ter T\u00f3th, Levente Gy\u00f6ngy\u00f6si). Angelica Girls' Choir premiered several of their music pieces at concerts and festivals.\r\n\r\nThe choir has participated in numerous choir competitions with tremendous success. They came first in the international choir competitions of Debrecen (Hungary), Arezzo and Rome (Italy), Neerpelt (Belgium), Tolosa (Spain) and Cork (Ireland). They won the gold medal in the 10th Choir Olympics in Athens (Greece). Furthermore, they toured in North- and South America, Japan and Europe. They sang in the Notre-Dame Cathedral (Paris), Saint Peter's Cathedral (Rome), Saint Michael's Cathedral (Brussels) and in the European Parliament. They are regular participants of the Spring Festivals, Budapest, they sing in prestigious concert halls (the Concert Hall of the Academy of Music, Budapest Music Centre, Palace of Arts, Festetics Palace) and in the greatest churches of Budapest (Saint Stephen\u2019s Basilica, Matthias Church). Angelica Girls' Choir gives concerts with outstanding musicians and orchestras, such as Andrea V\u00edgh, Gergely Bog\u00e1nyi, Ildik\u00f3 Cserna, Budapest Festival Orchestra, The Symphonic Orchestra of the Hungarian Radio, Dohn\u00e1nyi Orchestra, Danubia Orchestra, Budapest String Orchestra and Honv\u00e9d Choir. The voice of the choir is preserved through radio and television recordings and they have released seven Cds.\r\n\r\nIn 2009 Angelica Girls\u2019 Choir was honoured with the Hungarian Heritage Award; in 2013 they were awarded Junior Prima Award, and PRIMA Award in 2014.\r\nThe leader and conductor of the choir, Zsuzsanna Gr\u00e1f, is a prominent musician, who has been given Artisjus Award three times. The era marked by the name of J\u00e1nos Ferencsik and Kobayashi Ken-Ichiro was followed by a new chapter in the history of the orchestra when in 1997 Zolt\u00e1n Kocsis became general music director until his death. In almost two decades the National Philharmonic Orchestra underwent renewal. After the death of Zolt\u00e1n Kocsis, the Ferenc Liszt Award-winning Zsolt Hamar held the post of Musical Director at the Hungarian National Philharmonic from March 2017 to August 2020. He previously worked with the orchestra as its first permanent conductor and built up an impressive international career.\r\n\r\nThe Orchestra is one of the top interpreters of the work of B\u00e9la Bart\u00f3k, and the albums of the <em>Bart\u00f3k New Series<\/em> have won numerous accolades in Hungary and abroad.
