Starting as a member of an orchestra, he soon took on conducting. 1993-95 he was first Kapellmeister and Deputy Music Director at the Anhaltisches Theatre in Dessau, 1996-98 he held the same position at the Vienna Volksoper. 1999-2004 he was Music Director at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona and 2002-2010 he was Music Director of the Radio Symphony Orchestra in Vienna. Bertrand de Billy is principal guest conductor of the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne (2013-2016). Since 2014\/2015 he is also principal guest conductor of the Dresdner Philharmonie.\r\n\r\nAlready at an early stage of his carrier engagements brought him to the state operas in Vienna, Berlin, Hamburg and Munich, to the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London, the Grand Th\u00e9\u00e2tre de la Monnaie, Op\u00e9ra National de Paris and to the opera houses in Washington and Los Angeles amongst others. Since 1997 he has been a regular guest at the Metropolitan Opera in New York and since 2002 at the Salzburg Festival. Worldwide, he performed with leading orchestras including the Cleveland Orchestra, the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, Staatskapelle Dresden, the Orchestre de Paris, the Wiener Symphoniker as well as Museumsorchester Frankfurt, Philharmoniker Hamburg, the RSB Berlin, Konzerthaus Orchestra Berlin, Dresdner Philharmoniker, K\u00f6nigliche Kapelle Kopenhagen, NHK Symphony Orchestra, Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra and many more. Bertrand de Billy conducts a wide repertoire from Bach to many world premieres and premieres. A kompon\u00e1l\u00e1s csak lassan haladt, mert a zeneszerz\u0151, illetve a koreogr\u00e1fus Michel Fokine \u00e9s a d\u00edszlettervez\u0151 Leon Bakst koncepci\u00f3ja gy\u00f6keresen k\u00fcl\u00f6nb\u00f6z\u00f6tt egym\u00e1st\u00f3l; Ravel ugyanis az \u00f3kori g\u00f6r\u00f6g vil\u00e1got a 18. sz\u00e1zadi francia rokok\u00f3 fest\u0151k szem\u00fcveg\u00e9n kereszt\u00fcl, az \u0151 kifinomult, eleg\u00e1ns modorukban szerette volna felid\u00e9zni. A darabot v\u00e9g\u00fcl 1912 j\u00fanius\u00e1ban mutatt\u00e1k be a Chatelet sz\u00ednh\u00e1zban, langyos fogadtat\u00e1s mellett. A sz\u00ednpadi m\u0171k\u00e9nt kev\u00e9ss\u00e9 sikeres Daphnis \u00e9s Chlo\u00e9 zen\u00e9je, Ravel \u00e9letm\u0171v\u00e9nek egyik legfontosabb alkot\u00e1sa viszont hamar megtal\u00e1lta a k\u00f6z\u00f6ns\u00e9ghez vezet\u0151 utat: a komponista \u00e1ltal k\u00e9sz\u00edtett k\u00e9t zenekari szvit k\u00f6z\u00fcl k\u00fcl\u00f6n\u00f6sen a m\u00e1sodik v\u00e1lt igen n\u00e9pszer\u0171v\u00e9, s a teljes balettzene is sokkal gyakrabban sz\u00f3lal meg a koncertp\u00f3diumon, mint szcenikus form\u00e1ban. Maga a zeneszerz\u0151 \u201ekoreograf\u00e1lt szimf\u00f3ni\u00e1nak\u201d nevezte m\u0171v\u00e9t, amelynek formai konstrukci\u00f3j\u00e1t kev\u00e9s sz\u00e1m\u00fa alapmot\u00edvum fogja egybe. Az egyfelvon\u00e1sos balett h\u00e1rom jelenetb\u0151l \u00e1ll; a jelenetek k\u00f6z\u00f6tt azonban nincs \u00e9les hat\u00e1rvonal: a hallgat\u00f3 a m\u0171vet folyamatos esem\u00e9nysork\u00e9nt \u00e9rz\u00e9keli. A nagy l\u00e9tsz\u00e1m\u00fa zenekarban k\u00e9t h\u00e1rfa, cseleszta \u00e9s sokf\u00e9le \u00fct\u0151hangszerszerepel (k\u00f6zt\u00fck aeoliphone, a sz\u00e9l hangj\u00e1t ut\u00e1nz\u00f3 g\u00e9p), s a m\u0171ben a hangszeres zen\u00e9szek mellett fontos szerepet kap a sz\u00f6veg n\u00e9lk\u00fcl, a sz\u00ednfalak m\u00f6g\u00f6tt \u00e9nekl\u0151 vegyeskar. A kompoz\u00edci\u00f3 egyik legvonz\u00f3bb eleme a var\u00e1zslatos hangz\u00e1s, amely az els\u0151 pillanatokban rabul ejti a hallgat\u00f3t.\r\nA balett sz\u00fczs\u00e9j\u00e9t Michel Fokine a k\u00f6zismert \u00f3kori g\u00f6r\u00f6g t\u00f6rt\u00e9net (\u00e1ll\u00edt\u00f3lag Longosz m\u0171ve) egyes r\u00e9szletei alapj\u00e1n \u00edrta meg. A cselekm\u00e9ny Leszbosz sziget\u00e9n, egy barlang bej\u00e1rata el\u0151tt kezd\u0151dik, ahol h\u00e1rom nimfa szobra \u00e1ll. Ifjak \u00e9s le\u00e1nyok, k\u00f6zt\u00fck egy p\u00e1sztor, Daphnis, \u00e9s egy p\u00e1sztorl\u00e1ny, Chlo\u00e9 vir\u00e1gokat hoznak a nimf\u00e1k olt\u00e1r\u00e1ra, majd k\u00f6rt\u00e1ncot lejtenek. Daphnis \u00e9s Dorcon (ez ut\u00f3bbi is szeretn\u00e9 a sz\u00e9p Chlo\u00e9 kez\u00e9t elnyerni) \u00f6sszem\u00e9rik t\u00e1nctud\u00e1sukat: a gy\u0151ztes jutalma Chlo\u00e9 cs\u00f3kja lesz. Dorcon groteszk, esetlen t\u00e1nc\u00e1t kinevetik (Ravel a zen\u00e9ben eg\u00e9szen \u00e9leth\u0171en \u00e1br\u00e1zolja a nevet\u00e9st), majd Daphnis \u201ek\u00f6nnyed \u00e9s kecses\u201d t\u00e1nca k\u00f6vetkezik. Chlo\u00e9 a t\u00f6bbiekkel egy\u00fctt t\u00e1vozik, s a sz\u00ednpadon egyed\u00fcl marad\u00f3 Daphnist egy m\u00e1sik fiatal n\u0151, Lyceniona klarin\u00e9tok \u00e9rz\u00e9ki hangj\u00e1ra pr\u00f3b\u00e1lja meg elcs\u00e1b\u00edtani \u2013 sikertelen\u00fcl.
